Failed to replace the Fuel Filter - R50

Hi
Wanted to replace the fuel filter in Mini One R50 2002.
Got the new filter , and wanted to work according to this guide :

Mini Cooper S (R50/53): Replacing Fuel Filter

http://www.billswebspace.com/MiniR50...erDIYGuide.htm

when pulled the filter, found out that it's not the same as mentioned in the manuals.
it looks different ! couldn't figure how to separate it from it's housing.

how can i dis-assemble it? the metal round thing , is it the filter itself or it's housing ? i ask cause the new replacement filter i got is paper made.

Ive never seen that as a filter... you didn't pull the fuel pump out did you? What side did you pull this off of? Driver or passenger?

Passenger side
That is the fuel pump , with the fuel level thing attached to it too
The filter is located inside the fuel pump, isn't it ?

You took the wrong side off... the fuel filter canister is on the passenger side cover...which is next to your fuel pump that you already have taken out.. Just pull off the inspection cover on the passenger side.. you will see then... If you have more questions feel free to ask... But now you have to put your fuel pump back in... Good luck

Done more search and found this post :

Heres a previous post, same problem as you

DIY R50 Cooper Fuel filter/sender problems
DIY R50 Cooper Fuel filter/sender problems
Hi all, im hoping you can help me with a problem i have.

Yesterday i serviced my R50 cooper 2001, when it came to the fuel filter i looked in the manual to find it is in the tank etc.
When i pulled the sender unit out i found it looks different to the one in the manual, and every one ive seen on the how to's online, most seem to simply have a screw top and a paper filter, which is what i was supplied with, however my sender has clips that you need a million hands to hold and pull the top off! and a metal filter which i cant seem to remove once the top is off!

What i want to know is why is my sender different to everything else ive seen.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Many thanks
Gareth

Thanks Nun. For the sake of future users , here is the rest of the short , important thread:

Here i am with the same issue, just ordered the filter etc, cracked open the tank and there before me sat something not covered anywhere on the net, and looking nothing like any write-up I've seen, well up to the point where it states to twist open the housing and instead there are clips and looks to be a metal canister inside.
Very glad i saw your post as it saved me trying to undo the numerous clips to find that metal canister, big thumbs up for that ;o) saved me so much hassle and swearing.
Did you find out the solution, as i would be grateful to know the answer to this puzzle
Alan

So...................

MINI Coopers (non S) built prior to 03/2002 have a steel filter that is not normally replaceable, you have to replace the complete unit if you think its giving problems.
MINI thereon had replaceable paper filters

WTF...

Thanks Zippy

I wanted to share a thought :

How about changing the fuel pump for the later on models? Is it possible ?
In this case , filter can be replaced .

Hey omri617, I was going to ask you do you have 2 inspection covers under your back seat? I do know the US model MINIs might have some differences from yours... I just don't want to give you bad info.. So what thought did you want to share? Is it the fuel pump change? cheers!!

Yeah , I was thinking , if it's really on early models that the filter was "life long" which I really don't buy this thing , life long is only God ! I thought , maybe I could just replace the whole pump with the later ones , so I can change the filter once needed. The thing is just to know if it fits by measures , and specs.

Checked , got 2 covers . The one I removed is as mentioned above , the passenger side.
The driver's side has 2 wires (red & white ) and sealed with glue, so didn't want to remove it.

Just one note...
The Mini ONE is NOT imported into north America.....so for anybody here...it is just best guesses in trying to help you. While the basic MINI ONE is mostly a lower- powered, no frills r50, as we have been told (in the us)....there are some real difference...especially in early ones.
...I strongly suggest you check on a euro centric mini site....bet they have a mini one fuel filter changing guide!! Good luck!!

P. S. The wires sticking out with the glue and electrical tape is not factory ....so it is likely modified in some way.

I appreciate all opinions and the effort to help , really!
I had another look at RealOeM , here what I found
The filter comes with the level sensor , it costs 214.38$
If it's the deal , it's stupid . If someone wants to change the filter he needs to change also the level sensor ..

On my photo above , it's obvious that the driver's side cover is the pump , and the other is the level sensor and filter.

Really?
How Should it look ? Could be the wiring is set this way with a connection to the alarm system so it disconnects it when needed? Just guessing

For future readers that have the same question as I: in Israel are cars left hand drive (i.e., the steering wheel is on the left, as in America) or right hand drive (as in Great Britain)?

When a filter gets plugged...psi drops...volume drops...
Adding a filter inline will drop more psi.....the fuel line in fuel injected car is pressurized.... So splicing in a line is kinda dangerous....
If you removed the stock filter...and installed one inline is an option....but not perfect...the pump is not protected from debris.
Unless you are having issues due to low fuel psi...I would ignore this till you MUST do a repair....then do something.
