HELP!! i lost 6th Gear

just today i went to go into 6th and it would not go in i let out the clutch and it just loosely grinds. like its jut kicking the gear it wont catch. all day it was fine. don know whats up... 5th gear will be sketchy some times; sometimes i have to try twice to get it to catch. but it goes in with no fuss. other than that the 5th 6th gear plane feels weird going into like pushing the lever right has been limited or something.

also lately the gear shifts have been weird like its really clicky no noise or and extra force needed just going in and out of each gear it like it has a biger notch it has to jump over or something.

anyway i am really hoping its just the cables and that they can be adjusted. i really really hope this is true, because i do not want to drop the tranny.

any ideas?

Unless someone chime in with the exact same issues like yours I would just take it to a transmission shop to get to the root. I hope its nothing like major issues.

i was reading on anothor forum that there is a mod that can be done to the levers? any idea what that is. they gave no other info. and it was a 3 year old thread.

also sense im down there whats a good tranny oil to use. got 135k and im positive the oil has never been changed.

gonna start with the cables first book says loose or cables on there way out will cause this. which was my original idea.

Check the cables first....
If not the cables, then i'm thinking it MIGHT be a throwout bearing from your description....yhe mini uses a plastic one that can come appart....but tough to tell from the description, but the 6 speed is prett tough unless really abused, so hopefull it is ok.
might be worth looking at the master/slave , MIGHT be worth looking for fluid leaking sround the dustcover.....

through out bearing would not make sense to me because it would cause a problem with all the gears not just 6th and sometimes 5th.

Did you check the cables like suggested? that would be the 1st place to check. Does it go into 4th? Check the shifter box under the car and under the heat shield. See if there is anything preventing the full throw.

I just had an issue with 2nd gear recently, it turns out that the positive cable that runs from the battery to the engine bay got loose from its anchors right below the airbox and right above the gear linkage in transmission and was preventing me from fully engaging 2nd. The linkage was hitting the pos cable and couldnt fully engage. I took the airbox out and reattached the pos. cable properly. No more problems. There is just enough space for the gear shifter linkage to move freely. Not sure if that's what causing your problem but it solved mine. Thought I would share my experience.

yup R & 1-4 are perfect 5th sometimes needs a second try and 6th is a no go. but the shiftier does feel very notchy. i have not been able to get to the cables yet. im going to work in a little bit then a 12hr work day tomorrow so Sunday ill have to take a look.

so poke around a little today. cables and posts are fine. its 100% internal....

very likely its the 6th gear syncro or a retaining clip jumped out of its groove and now the gear just floats around the shaft.

also changed the oil shifting is heck of a lot nicer now.

oh also would like to add that i can put it in 6th from a dead stop and get it rolling and cant get it in gear when the car is in motion so its a synco most likely but why 6th it dosent make sense to me that take no abuse what so ever.
