I usually buy the factory replacement. What brand is the$50 version. For $50 it better come with a lap dance.

I've always used the Mann HU8162X filter. You can find them at an Napa, (or Amazon). $9 or $10

The oem/MANN usually seem to have better fitting O-rings...
as for better/worse filtering....most all of what you get in a public forum will be just guess.....you need to research the filtering abilities of the two brands....
But a $50 filter?!!! That is crazy!!

for fun I went to the AZ site and searched for oil filters for a 2003 Cooper S

I get two, one for $8 and one for $24

neither are ones I'd recommend. I won't use them myself. Too many stories on here about these filters being damaged when they came off the car.

I prefer to stick with OE which I get from the dealer for under $10 .... others I do oil for bring in MANN and I'll use what they bring - have not had a problem with MANN

here's what Way Motor Works has to say on the topic:

Don't bother trying to save a dollar. Get these original MINI oil filter kit to change your oil. We only use these OEM filters in the shop for customer MINI's. Many aftermarket filters don't fit correct or the O rings will leak.

Way sells a lot of aftermarket stuff, but only OE oil filters . . .

Mann all the way. You can get them from Way. 50 bucks for a filter is nuts. I'm guessing it was priced incorrectly.

that's a picture of the OE filter kit . . .

MANN might make the OE filter, however I can tell you that if you put a MANN and an OE side by side they are not "the same"

MANN (image from MiniMania.com)

OE (Image from WAY)

and for the record I'm not confusing a GEN2 filter, they are different

Mann make the OEM filter. Nothing wrong with the OEM filter.

50 bucks for a filter? Wow, I'm trying to sell two OEM filters and 9 quarts of Mini oil for 70.

that $50 filter must be the BMW life time unit. At least you don't have to pre oil it.
