My wife's 02 MC w/CVT w/10,000 miles died two days ago. She was driving in a parking lot and the car shut off and coasted to a stop. It was in "D" at the time. You could not move the shift out of "D." The dealer tells me they think the tranmission is shot and will have to be replaced. Any similar problems with the CVT out there. This CVT was part of the transmission fluid recall and we'd had problems with it lurching when you went from "R" to "D." The lurching problem was fixed with a software upgrade. Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear about that. I have the same kind of car, but it only died on me 3 times, when everything was on; A/C, and radio. I also noticed that it lurched as well, but thankfully it stopped after I had the software upgraded in it. Now.. what is the transmission fluid recall? And, does she drive it in sport mode alot of the time?

There were some 02 MINIs that had the wrong type of transmission fluid put in them. Not sure of the VIN number range. The wife never drives it in sport mode. She just puts it in "D" and drives.

I wonder if the CVT recall could have something to do with it failing later. MY 02 CVT was not recalled. It's still working marvelous after 42,000 miles. Never stalled or lurched. It's been driven in sport mode 50 to 60% of it's life I'd guess.

The CVT wrong fluid recall affected only very early 2003 model year Cooper CVTs. The date build range is from September 2002 to late October 2002. Owners of these cars have experienced problems and/or failures of their CVT gearboxes. The recall recommended dealers to flush the transmission oil 3 times, problem is that most of these CVTs had already piled up a few hundred or even thousands of miles in them before the problem was announced, thus these CVTs probably already sustained enough damage to shorten thier useful service lives, in despite of flushing the bad oil fluid and putting in the correct one.

Our Cooper CVT was the last of the 2002 CVTs built (Early August 2002 build) and therefore our car was never part of the CVT fluid recall. The car has been rock solid reliable in 22,100 miles and 17 months of service.

We are very glad we went for a late 2002 Cooper CVT instead of of an early 2003 Cooper CVT. We were offered this option by the dealer but we decided to stick with our 2002 order. If we had gone for a 2003, most likely we would have been stuck with one of the defective early 2003 CVTs.

To learn more about the CVT fluid recall, go to:

and perform a search using key words "CVT", "FLUID", "RECALL".

Good luck.

What's you car's build date?

Look at the factory sticker or plaque affixed to the driver's side door jamb (Looking towards the rear of the vehicle). There you'll see the month/year of manufacture. If the build date is on or after September 2002 (9/2002) then your car is one of the early 2003 Cooper CVTs affected by the problem with the bad fluid.

Here is a copy of the recall from Autoweek.com:

I might add that the August 2002 reference applies to vehicles build towards the end of that month, so yeah there were a few 2002's but the great majority of affected CVTs were early 2003's.

Just a follow-up to my original posting. Got the MINI back today after a week at the dealer. The only explanation given was that the transmission had to be replaced - nothing else. So, with 10,000 miles, we've got a new transmission. First car I've had (and I've had a lot) in over 30 years of driving to require a new transmission . . .
