Bolt size for heat shield

Hello All.

Once again I need your expertise. Every time I have had an issues with my daughters 2002 Mini, you have come through and saved the day.

Somehow or another the heat shield that covers the top of the exhaust has come off the head and is just bouncing around under the hood. I believe it takes three bolts, possibly four to attach it properly. It was -10* out this morning so I only took a brief look. Does anyone have any idea what size bolt I need to go purchase to re-attach this part?

Thank you in advance.

Mike

PS: I did try a few searches but did not come up with anything.

You need a special fastener. They are not much of a bolt. I just ordered some from Mini Mania after trying a ton of different options from the hardware store with no success. They were pretty cheap. Just search for heat shield fasteners on the mini mania site.

I looked on Mini Mania and the only part I could find was intended for the heat shield covering the exhaust at some point underneath the vehicle. The shield I am referring to is under the hood, coming off the, I believe, cylinder head and covering the header as it drops downwards. Sorry if I described it incorrectly.
I was able to feel bolt holes and they seemed to line up distancewise where the shield has holes.

The 2 bolts that hold the heat shield above the manifold are 13mm. But you are correct on the M8X16-8.8 in short call it m8x1.5

Yep, I stand corrected...Was thinking about the header bolts themselves which are 10mm heads. Heatshield bolts are 13mm heads.

Don't forget to 'never seize' the threads. FYI and others, bolts, as far as the trade is concerned, are described by diameter; length; tread pitch and finially strength. Often bolts get referd to by spanner size. Ok between persons in a workshop but no good for ordering a specific bolt. If you still have one left in the shield pull it out and measure it up. You could also take it to a bolt supply shop and they can match it.

I have searched at several local auto parts stores, my brothers shop, and hardware stores to no avail. This bolt is quite the biatch to find. I am just going to order from the above link that S&CLC referenced.

Thanks, will report when completed.

We have specialist fastener shops here (much to do with mining in the state I guess). They usually charge a premium for small quantity but even that varies between shops. Check your Yellow (?) Pages.
