Hi guys, I know I haven't posted in a while, but I had a quick question.. On your tachometer (that thing above the steering wheel, right?), do the lights between#5 and #6 light up? Or, are they dark all the time? My lights from #6 and higher are always lit. I also noticed that even with the lights on, the lights between #5 and #6 dont' light up at all. Do I need to have this fixed right away? I just noticed in in February, when I had my car serviced and had my temperature changed from celsius to fahrenheit. Anyhow.. I look forward to your replies!
Yep, this is the engine's "red line" zone or otherwise known as the "forbidden" zone if you want your engine to last.
If you have a regular Cooper 5-speed or a CVT model, the red line begins at 6K RPM. If you have a MCS, your redline will start at 6,800 RPM.

>>wait.. my redline is at 6000 rpms? im obviously not in my car right now, but that doesnt sound right (5-speed)

Yes it should be. Earlier Cooper CVT's (Like mine) have the redline at 5,500RPM, but 5-speeds should start at 6K RPM>

Hmmmmm ..... my 2002 MC 5 speed has the redline at 6800. Anybody else?

The redline on my 2003 MC CVT was at 5500 prior to the install of v36.0 software. After v36.0 the redline change to 6000, so when you had the temp changed to "F " from "C" they may have upgraded you to v36.0 which raised the redline. And I can tell you that the CVT now shifts at 6000 vs 5500 when I an driving very hard and I have enjoyed that alot more. Drive it, push it, redline it!!!!!!

I'm kind of curious about this whole tachometer lighting question.
On my MCS, there are a series of lights starting from about 600 and going all the way up to the top, 8000 I guess. As you guys know, only some of the lights light up red, the others stay unlit and appear gray.
Here's my question. Is the car's ECU calculating a red line based on some variable factors and deciding where to start lighting up the red part of the tach? Or is the model of your car the deciding factor?

MINI uses the same techometer in all their cars. Based on your model, different number of bars are lit to indicate different red-line RPMs. This is probably done as a cost saving measure. The red-line stays the same in your car (unless a software upgrade changes your red-line RPM).

The 5.5K RPM redline in our '02 CVT did not change after V36 was installed.

Hm, I guess I forgot to mention I drive a 2002 CVT. All I know is that there are absolutely no lights between 5000 and 6000 rpms (even with the headlights on), and from 6000 and up, the red lights are on all the time. I was just wondering if I needed a new bulb or something, if there is one between the #5 and #6.
But I did have a software upgrade, and before the lights between 5000 rpm and 6000rpm were always lit.
