r53 boiling coolant from expansion tank cap

The title says it all. For the past few days, I've noticed coolant seepage from the cap. I added some 50/50 coolant, bled the system and ordered a new cap. Well today, I caught the car trying to overheat. I shut it off, let it cool down and carefully made it home. Again, I added coolant, bled the system and then sat there and watched it run for about 15 minutes. Coolant started pouring out of the cap like the damn thing wasn't even there. I'm still waiting for my new cap to be delivered, but is there a bigger issue behind all this?

sounds like something else is wrong.. it shouldn't be pushing that much pressure through the expansion tank.. maybe something is clogged in the system? or the thermostat is messed?

phil.

Does this happen at a stop, or while the car is in motion with a decent breeze flowing through the radiator? Check the 5A fuse under the hood, if the fan isn't kicking in and it is getting too hot, it will boil over. As Temp rises, Pressure rises. And at a certain point, the pressure has to go somewhere. And that cap is the weakest point in the system so that's where it will naturally release.

If you still have the stock harmonic damper check it to make sure it is still solid. I have seen more than one time this happening when the damper is going.

Other than that, does it seem to running ok?
No odd sounds or smells?
I might thry bleeding it again..mini's can be tough, and a bit of driving can help get air bulbles to move around......overfilling WILL result in a boilover.....the fill line is pretty close to seam...it is easy to overfill.
one all other options are looked at....it is possible the headgasket is leaking exaust into the system....but not very likely.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm gonna wait to try the new cap before anything else. Unfortunately, if that works, I'm putting for sale signs up on it. I just can't afford to fix it every month. I'll post an update when I get the cap on

I know what you mean. I love the car, but I'm 19 and have college tuition to pay. I just can't afford to fix it all the time.

I'm in the same boat spent over $4000 since I got her in may. I say you invest in an obd scanner.
