R50/53 2004 Mini cooper S engine swap
2004 Mini cooper S engine swap
Hi,I'm new here and figure I'd share my story here.My mother was looking to buy a mini cooper For a new car.Since I'm a Mechanic I told her to try and find something that needs work.So we found an 04 MINI cooper S that needed engine work.I was originally told by the shop that the car needed a new head gasket, but once I started working on the car I realized it was more then just a head gasket. After cranking the car for awhile it finally ran and blew smoke. So I decided to do a compression test. The results were #1 was 30psi,#2 was 40psi,#3 was 40psi and #4 was 65psi.I then dropped oil into the cylinders and they all shot up to 180-210PSI.
I then started to look for a new engine and found one all complete from an 06 Mini S.As for me I have no prior experience with working on mini's,I mostly work with LS1 engines/GM cars so this was new for me.Unfortunately I had a full house at my shop so I had to do the swap in my driveway. It took me about 3-4 hours to get the engine out of the car.I Dropped the K-member,then pulled the engine from the car.I did notice that some vacuum lines were different between the 04-06,crank pully was also different,FPR was different,Oil pressure sensor and a few little things.I used the 04 PCM /Wire harness.
I installed the new engine in the car a few days ago and it fired right up.This morning I re-assembled the whole car.In all I would say it wasn't that bad of a swap,The belt was a PITA to get back on the engine.Transmission shifter link-age was also a little tedious since if it doesn't sit exactly right the shifter becomes rock hard to move.At this moment I only have pictures of when I pulled the engine, but will take some more tomorrow.Hope this may be helpful to someone, any questions feel free to ask

So despite the FPR and oil pressure sensor, what else was different? Good to know you can reuse the older harness and PCM.
The difference in the crank pulley was because of a redesigned part due to the high rate of failures.
Keep a hold of the old supercharger and have it rebuilt. Would be nice to have a spare in the garage for when the newer unit dies.

re
So today I took the car for a ride and everything was good.Shifter is a little stiff when the engine is running,so tomorrow I'm going to bring it to my shop and pump fluid through the slave to get the air bubbles completely out. Also noticed the power steering pump is bad,It works for a few minutes, whines then stops working. Also the windshield wipers did not work,Had to change the wiper motor

Yes ill hold on to the supercharger,06 engine has 30 000 miles on it so I think I have awhile before I have to deal with a supercharger problem.Doesn't make any bearing noise.
