R50/53 Brake sensor question

Brake sensor question
I have a May 2002 build R50 and I am doing a brake job. I bought new brake sensors but when I took off the wheels I didn't find any sensors installed. Did so previous shade-tree mechanic remove them or did the car not come with them?
