R50/53 Advice on selling old car (to make room for MINI)
The good news is, my Mini's here. The bad news is that the Mini dealer is offering an absurdly low amount on my Honda Civie trade-in (20 percent of the Edmunds "true market value."
But okay, I expected that. It's been a while since I've sold a used car, and so much has changed. Can anyone suggest a good website or print publication for selling used cards. I live in Los Angeles. I've looked at eBay, Autotrader -- any idea of what is most cost-effective and is most likely to lead to a sale? Thanx!

my mini dealership didn't even want to take tradein. they recommended carmax just down the street. i wonder if they have the share of carmax' profit. anyway, carmax will pay you wholesale for your car which is alot different than tradein value given by kbb.com (which carmax directs you to in their website). it takes around 1.5 hrs and they cut you a check right there.
Unless you're selling a really low-priced car, I think the best place to advertise is on a high-traffic Internet site like autotrader.com or cars.com.
The good thing about these sites is that you can place a "run-til-it-sells" ad with one or more pictures and plenty of space for a sales pitch fairly inexpensively. Plus, you can change the price, pictures, or sales pitch ad nauseum at no additional cost.
I think ads on cars.com are also viewable from the classified section of most metropolitan newspaper websites, not just by people visiting the cars.com site.
btw, if it is a really low-priced car, your best bet might be the PennySaver...
Honda Civics are always popular so you shouldn't have much trouble.
Never, ever let a dealer sucker you into trading in your car!

Around here, the best way to sell a car like that
is to find a parking lot, or friend's driveway with
high traffic and put signs in the windows. May
sound too low tech, but I've sold several that
way, each time in less than a week. Just my 2c.
God speed.

CARMAX is good. Done it twice, got more than trade- n offers, did not feel pregnant and unloved afterwards........of course, they were nice, well kept, log maintained, low mileage mean machines.......

I recently sold a toyota truck in Southern Ca and found that I got the most calls from Craigslist (which is free to post) and Autotrader which is both online and in print. I sold it for above the blue book value in under two weeks.
I used Autotrader.com & the loacal papers to sell my WRX in order to make room for my MCS. I only had one call from the paper listing but about 12 (including the guy that ended up buying it!) from autotrader.com. They have a good deal to let you run the listing until your car sells.
