I talked with my dealer today about the extended service contract offered by Mini. They quoted me $695 for the extended contract. I saw posts on this site, where people had purchased the contract for $450. Can you purchase the contract from any dealership? If so, who has purchased theirs for the cheapest. Thanks.

$695? Dayum! MINI of Hawaii charged me $1395 for a 7 year service contract on the CVT. With all the problems with the car, the $$$ may have been well spent.

Beast,

I am talking about the service contract (i.e. oil changes, brakes...), not the extended warranty that can go to 7 year 100,000 miles. the service contract only goes to 5 years 48k miles.

I was quoted $695 by local SoCal dealers for the extended service contract. I was also told that there is no extended warranty (different from service contract) available... does anyone know differently for a fact?

Hmm, didn't get offered the extended service contract. What does it cover? Complete brake jobs? Inspection I and II? If so, that's a pretty good deal.

I'm at 38k and decided not to do the extended
service contract. I can get the oil changes done
cheaper and my nearest dealer is nearly 3 hours
away. As I recall, I was quoted the $695 you were.

God speed.

Hmmm, $695 extended service K. That's for an $8 filter and $22 in synthetic motor oil or about $30 per change. Works out to about 23 changes in variable cost to the dealer. At 15,000 miles per change, that's only 345,000 miles that you have to drive to get ahead on the deal.

Gentlemen, start your engines!

Yeah, don't even factor the oil change into your consideration; they'd only give you one between 36k and 48k anyway. I guess the decision comes down to your driving style and whether or not you think you'll wear your brakes down before 48k.

I've always thought of extended warranties as a bum deal, but in the case of this car, plagued with as many problems as it is, and with BMW gouging us as if we're driving $80,000 7-series cars, it would probably actually be a decent deal. Maybe that's why they don't seem to offer it.

All this talk about extended service contracts...got me thinking. Anyone know how much MINI Service charges for installing new brake pads all around? What about new pads PLUS new rotors? Could a "regular" brake shop do the job right...you know like Mieneke or Midas or Goodyear...or are the MINI brakes/rotors difficult or "non-standard" job that requires the "expertise" of a MINI Service Technician? If it costs more than $700 for new pads and rotors installed all around, and they are covered by the $695 extended contract...it may be worth it.

Rock On,

-Joe

The brake issue was how the dealer was trying to sell
the extended service. A bit of a gamble, 'cause if
by the end of the time period you want new brakes
and they say you don't quite need them yet-- you lose!

God speed.

Gabe,

thanks for the info, I knew I saw it on your site somewhere. So I think we can plainly see the pros and cons. Now can anyone tell me if you can purchase the contract at another dealer. In Gabe's post someone bought it for $400 at Patrick. Could you purchase it from another dealer and then use it at the one you are currently getting the car serviced at? $400 might not be too bad.

Absolutely. You can buy it at any mini dealership and use it at any other. I simply went to my dealer asked again what their price was and then told them that I was about to buy it at another for $400 (I just didn't tell them the dealer was in Ohio!). They then gave it to me for $400 on the spot.
