For the R50/R53, does the rear seats fold back or is that only for the 2nd gen minis?

Dunno about "back." They don't fold back in my folks' second-gen Mini. They fold forward in both my R53 and my folks' R56, and once folded lie completely flat in both.

Folding "back" could be either way depending on which way you are facing the seats
My guess is that the OP means folding into themselves like a clam shell.
While my R50 and R56 seat fold down forward, the R56 does have 2 positions for the rear seats, tilted for passengers, or nearly vertical for more storage.
