Cooling Fan Problems

My daughter has an 02 Mini, non turbo automatic, which at first we thought was battery problems. After checking battery was good and the cooling fan will continue to run after car is shut off. Not for 10-15 minutes, but till it runs battery down. What is the problem...stuck relay or what? HELP!!!!!!!!

It might be the power steering pump.

Yes. Stuck relay. Unfortunately it is mounted on the fan assemble in a small plastic enclosure on the back side of the fan assembly. What I used to do before I replaced the fan was to tap the relay with a long extension and the fan will shut off. The relay is on the left side of the assembly on the fan side. There is no way to fix it without taking out the assembly.

Although you can replace the relay it is most likely that your low speed resister is also and bad and that cannot be fixed without replacing the assembly on an 2002.

Search "low speed fan relay" there is a less expensive fix but it is a mod, at least you would have a choice.

Yes. The fan assembly has to come out. Then you can choose to replace just the relay (under 10 bucks) or go for the whole assembly. The Dorman has an upgraded resister so that is what I would do as the labor to remove the fan is more than the part. The OEM part will eventually fail again.

On the 2002 there is no option for an external resister. Those only work for the one-plug assemblies with the external relay.

All this said, I kept a long 3/8s extension next to my seat for over 6 months before I replaced the assembly. I could tap that relay in complete darkness.

Any idea on this part # or where I can find the part #, was going to do the external mod for this ('05) but since the car is coming apart anyway I'd rather go this route.
Thanks

Rock Auto will give you choices. The current favorite seems to be the Dorman as it has a redesigned low speed resister.
