Changing oil tomorrow...need advice

I decided rather than paying $80+ to have my oil changed I'm going to do it myself.

I went to the auto parts store and was going to purchase the Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W30 oil but the store only had Mobil Super Synthetic 5W30. Can anyone tell me the difference if there is any? Heres what the bottle says as far as the difference between the two but how much difference is there actually?

I would really appreciate the help!

Thanks,
Jake

I am about to change my oil and stuff too, granted I can get a replacement oil drain plug in time...

I got a jug of Mobil 1 as well, however I have never seen "Super Synthetic", and the jugs I looked at had a different chart on the back of theirs.

I would say to just grab a jug of the regular Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic, like you were going to. The difference is probably minimal, but we won't know until someone who can look at the oil at a microscopic level can tell us.

By the way, if you look at the bottom panel on the jug in your picture, it says in black letters: "Mobil Super Synthetic helps provide outstanding high temperature protection for long engine life in vehicles of all ages. For our ultimate protection and performance, use Mobil 1, the world's leading synthetic motor oil brand."

So it's basically saying that it's not as good as Mobil 1, because it doesn't have the "1" in its name, and it's only "Super" instead of "Ultimate".

Most likly by the chart it is a budget oil....
Mobil 1 is ok....
Molbil 1 extented drain (gold bottle) comes close to meeting the 15000 mile life of mini oils in most tests i've seen....
Since regular mobil 1 is ok for less...it is fine for folks that do 7500 mile oilchanges....
The budget mobil you bought...better that conventiol oil....but even from what the bottle says does not seem to offer all the pervieved benifits of syenthic oil...I bet it won't make your engine blow up in one use....but it certainly seems to be a "price point" product....I wonder what they changed to make it cheaper...it looks to be situated where part suns or mixes usually listed...performance and marketing wise...
Personally, i'd put it in my other car.....

I just changed my oil and it's always ran Mobil 1 5w30. It had about 7800 miles on its change and the oil looked very good. (Still had the golden look, Not black) I went back with the same and also a OEM Filter. Make sure you change out the O-ring on the filter cap. Here in Ky. You can get Mobil 1 for $19.98 for a gallon (4 quarts)

If you look up the recommendation for the Mini, it says you should use the 0W-40 European formula.

Walmart carries jugs of Mobile1 synthetic. Check there first if you haven't already.

Where did you buy your oil filter from?

I wont buy anything other than the ones from the dealership. I had one from Autozone collapse on me. I have heard the same thing from others on here. I think they are around $10 a piece, but knowing that they are better quality than Wix is justification enough for me.

Most dealerships well ship them if there isnt one close to you.

just my two cents.

If you don't know what oil to use, why not go to the dealer - buy your filter and oil there for about the same price as running to the parts store and to Wally World for Mobil1

I buy 5 quarts of MINI oil and a filter for my R55 from the MINI dealer for about $35, tax included. Seems reasonable enough to me.......

to the OP, you don't say what year your car is, but do you have the right tools? You need either a 36mm or 27mm socket to remove the filter cannister, and either a good 6pt 13mm socket or an 8mm allen socket to remove the plug, among others.

Your owners manual has a spec listed. The oil you choose should meet that spec. For example BMW LL-01. As an engineer when I specify something I darn well intend for that spec to be followed....so I am a bit of a stickler on fluids.

Mobil1 0W-40 is on this list ( a bit old), but refer to the back of the bottle you are looking at

A lot of work. Need to drop subframe.
Do a search on oil pan gasket.

On my daughter's 06 Just A Cooper 5 speed no need to drop the cross member to change the oil pan gasket. Also, the crankshaft position sensor o-ring seems to always have a leak, not hard to change. Just buy the o-ring seal and oil filter from the dealer. The aftermarket oil filters can cause problems with the plastic internal parts of the oil filter bypass valve.

+1 on probably the crank position sensor leaking rather than the oil pan.
