Want to turbo a r53

So I haven't bougt a mini yet, but am thinking about buying an r53. Problem I have is the supercharger will make crazy amounts of heat and cause heatsoak reducing power and reliability of the mini over time and on long track sessions.

I did a lot of research (maybe not enough) but I want to know if anyone sells a kit to fit a turbo on an r53.

If not I will be fabricating a manifold and front mount intercooler setup for these cars in the next few weeks to come.

I currently drive an 03 cobra which makes north of 520hp and around a track charge temps can reach above 160 degrees which is horrible!

I want to run fad class and I want to run turbo. R56 turbo plus all the mods I want to do to car for track duty make the price of car unjustifiable and I would be better off in another platform.

Long post short... I want to turbo a r53, help me learn more about these cars plz

anyone here have any experience with this?

I want to use a mid size turbo so that the lag lower end will actually help the mini thru corners not having to worry about torque steer, and have power on tap for the straightaways.

sound good?

And there is no problem with the SC cars......not sure why you think turbo is better. Lots and lots of 1st gen cars on the track right now.

If he's looking fo alot of power than turboing it would be the way to go. Plus the R53's are better

Turbo = more power. The engine bay in the r56 is too small to do anything with the turbo and the r53's, from what i've been told, leave a little more room for customization.

Turbo doesn't always mean more power......and there are plenty of 300+hp 1st gen MINI's.

The engine is basically that of an SRT neon when it comes down to it. As such a lot of the stuff that applies to that motor applies to these as well. Your biggest hurdle is going to be tuning it as I dont know of any software out there that the end user can go and program the stock ECU with whenever they want (you cant map it yourself in other words). If it is strictly a track car and you plan to gut it or something then just make your life easy and get a stand alone.

If no room for customization or can't fit a bigger turbo, you can port both housings (turbine-compressor), change the blade and boost a bit more.
Put the same turbo back. If there is a room to a next size compressor housing,
you can hybrid the stock turbo and put it back.

Some Guy, the tuning yourself problem has been solved since December. The BytetroniK Full Access software from Mynes, allows for FULL end user tuning, it's pretty easy to use, and has been on quite a few cars (Even on NAM members, and former RMW supporter's cars) with great success. I have it running on my carand would never think of going back to needing a tuner to fly out from California every time I want to alter my tune.

Well in that case then, if the idea of turbo itself doesnt both you then I cant think of a reason NOT to turbo an R53 if you are looking for big numbers. Just remember the rules about area under the curve.

Get in touch with Mike Mynes. He will let you know the pros and cons of Turbo. Both he and Jan from RMW are going to be your best bet for power if you stay with SC.

so why did you want me to come out and tune your car with bytronik then?

Ugh, That was going to be a GRUOP tune, with a bunch of MINI5280 club members. If you payed attention to the other thread Jan, you would NOT be tuning my car. I only wanted a little more advice, on what does what, and how much adjustment to make. I found the bugs in my maps that are probably causing the small isues that we where having with the tune, and they will be resolved as soon as I get this SPRINTEX installed.

Lets all be friends here and try to keep on track of the OP's thread, If you want to bash on my project than you can do it HERE>>> https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...continued.html

Now if we could ever get Mynes and RMW WORKING TOGETHER...think how good that could be for all of us, including those two. But that has little to do with the OP's turbo question, other than the chance for some really good results.

to get this running correctly you will need a stand alone
anyone telling you different isn't being honest with you
while big turbo's are great for making power and showing off a dyno number it hasn't proven to be faster around a race track even in lighter cars

putting down big power in a fwd with a big turbo isn't going to happen, especially with a stock ecu
