Time to change Clutch??

I think its time to change my clutch...... I've got about 60k miles on my 04MC and while driving when changing the stick into gears, it isn't smooth.

Just wanted to know what clutch you guys recommend. Do i need to purchase a clutch kit or a clutch disc or flywheel..... ??

Let me know what you guys think of the clutches and the site below, they seem reasonably priced.

when starting from rest, is the engagement point on the clutch normal? or is the pedal high, or low? has it changed? (indication of wear)

when accelerating in 5th or 6th (or driving up a long hill or mtn.) does the engine RPM jump at all? (indication of clutch slippage)

can you get a trusted 2nd opinion?

You may be exactly correct on the cause of the "stickiness" in shifting, but many many clutches go that many miles without issue, and it's rather a lot of labor to change a clutch if the real issue is in the cables from the shift lever to the transmission.

cheers,

Charlie

Well, I'm the 2nd owner of the car and I've only put about 5k miles on it. The previous owner didn't really take great care of the car.
The clutch is and was high from when I initially bought it. The rpms don't jump while driving up hills or in while I'm in 5th.

If I do need to change it, what exactly do I need?
Is buying the clutch kit enough? Do I need the clutch kit or can I just purchase an individual part??

Let me know guys

Thanks

if the clutch is high, then it should be fully disengaged during a gear change

if it is fully disengaged, then the stickiness in shifting may be due to other causes

i'd check the oil level in the gearbox just to be sure that's correct

i'd also suspect the cable linkage to the transmission could be a cause

if you've either an independent shop or a dealer that you trust, i'd consider paying an inspection fee

again, i'm not saying a clutch is a bad idea - it may be time. i'm just not at all sure that clutch wear is causing the issue that you describe

can some other wise folks weigh in here? am i mistaken perhaps?

cheers,

Charlie

Thanks for the help Charlie!!

I'll try to get it looked at soon, I know someone who works at a Mini and Bmw dealership who does work on the side.

Any other input would be great!

The 5 speed Midlands transmission is famous for having issues.
A+ for checking transmission fluid level.
I think having a tech who knows Mini's is the best bet.

I keep reading of all of the "issues" or the Midlands tranny is problematic. Can someone point me in the direction to support this or give me some incite? I know the CVT is super expensive to replace and not really fixable, but is the Midlands really that bad? In no way is this a defensive standpoint, but rather one inquiring for info. Hopefully I am not jacking this thread too much but maybe gather more info while exploring the possible issues the OP may have.

I hate to thread jack, but I've got the same symptoms as well as the slippage in 6th. At 90xxx miles, I'm fairly sure the clutch it done fore, but what causes that damn stiffness when we shift?
