Can you retrofit traction control?

Any way to add traction control to an R50? I'm guessing it's not as easy as the dealer just adding some module to the computer, right?

I don't think so. There are tons of sensors that measure all sorts of data. I do not know if those sensors are already in place.
On top of that I am sure you would need an update to your ECU.

Yah, I was guessing it be a pretty major job, and not just some easy add-on. Kinda like taking an R50 and dropping a six-speed in, IMHO.

To be honest I think adding a six speed would be easier as long as the transmission mounts are the same. The DSC would be cost-prohibitive.

I'll bet all of the sensors and so on are already there (what sensors does it use besides the wheel speed sensors and steering angle sensor, which are already there for the ABS and DSC), as well as the program, it's just a matter of "turning it on"........but knowing how zealously BMW guards their software, I'll bet it's still nigh on impossible unless you're a master hacker.

I have seen some of the salvage yards selling the complete DSC system.
Prices are around $200 - $400.00

It'd be great if we could get a definitive answer! I can't find anything by searching, so I do wonder if the dealer can basically turn it on.

also, what salvage yards did you find selling the system? Googled that as well, but no luck.

I can't see it being simply a turn-on feature...

I found several of them listed on ebay.
Not sure what's for sale now but they are out there.
Might check WMW and see if he has any parts or units available.

I wrote software used to test ABS brakes and I remember seeing an input for a yaw sensor.

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I recall there was a time when you could purchase the cruise control option later and all it required was a replacement steering wheel with the cruise control buttons and an ECU reflash. Perhaps contact your dealer and find out if that's even an option still? I gather all the cars ship with the necessary sensors, but the manufacturer wants to nickle and dime everyone, so they'll go to any lengths to have the customer pay for options that are already available in the car, just disabled in the software.

I can't fathom why you'd want traction control on your R50. Maybe DSC, but that traction nanny sucks.

My MINI has traction control & it is set to be off by default using one of Ian Cull's circuits.

I agree with Crashton, I would be fine with not having traction control. In fact I usually turn traction control off when driving in the snow in any car because I can do a much better job myself. Save your money and buy some performance parts to get the wheels spinning more!
