On the way to work this morning, a mini-van in front of me kicked up some road debris and it whacked my MC real good. It happened so fast I don't even know what the object was, but it dented/scratched/scraped my bumper, headlight, bonnet, apron, and even put a scratch on the roof behind the windshield, shredding the clear bra material as it went. Judging from the way the hood is gouged, the debris was made of metal and had edges. The impact was enough that it popped one of the vent grills out.

I'm over the shock of seeing my baby scarred up - now I'm just depressed thinking about dealing with the insurance company, getting a rental while it's being fixed, etc.

I'm thankful it wasn't worse - it could have gone through the windshield and killed me.

Stay alert out there everyone!

Aw that sucks, scooter!!! This is the second NAM MINI taken out by road debris this week, right?!?! I can certainly understand why you're bummed. Why oh why is this "stuff" laying in the road?!?!?! I bet it fell of a @%$#& truck!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrr.

BTW, thanks for the caution.

Wow, that must have been one menacing ninja star like bit of debris. Sorry so, especially looking at your mods. It's clear you love the car. Yes, speedy repairs!

Right... mine was the other! Scooterboy, I'm so sorry to hear your story... it's a terrible feeling to see your car savaged like that because of some other motorist's stupidity. I'm guessing you, like me, have no perpretrator to point to... it just "happened." It really sucks.

Best of luck getting your MINI back in showroom shape. I feel for you.

Bear

Because of the deep narrow gouging in the bonnet, I initially ruled out a blown tire as the weapon of mass destruction. But it occurs to me now that the steel belts in a shredded tire could have done the gouging.

Not that it matters. It wasn't anyone's fault, including the mini-van that kicked it up at me. Just bad luck.

That's some pretty nasty damage from debris Scooter. Thank goodness it did not go through the windshield!

I am sure a good shop will repair it to your satisfaction.

Good luck.

Regards,
Red

Sonofa.....!! Sorry that happened Scooterboy. This kind of damage really put into perspective my griping about the truck that cracked my windscreen. Hell, I was complaining because the repair still left a small chip in the glass. Now seeing this makes my experience trivial. Good luck and glad you are okay.

Thanks, everyone. I have to admit I'm taking it better than I thought I would.

I stopped at my dealer's recommended body shop on the way home tonight. Head honcho said the following:

Repair: bumper cover, roof, will try to polish out scratch in sunroof glass.
Replace: bonnet, apron, vent cover, trim ring around headlight, windshield, and the sunroof if the scratch can't be polished out.

He'll also include the re-installation of the clear bra in the estimate and says he's had no problem getting the insurance companies to pay for it in the past.

Forgot to ask him how long the repairs will take - probably a good thing!

And I think I'll be leaving a few extra feet between me and the car in front of me from now on.

Sorry to hear about the mess ... that looks like a lot of damage from road debris. Damn! I am sure they can fix it nicely though. Looks easy enough.

I had my share of pain last week, some idiot kid from the neighbourhood managed to walk over the car, leaving 2 nice dents on the roof and a minor almost unoticeable one on the bonnet. Will fix them later in the spring though, NY winters can be brutal and I never know what to expect here.

That would make me much angrier than the random bad luck I had. When I read some of these threads about *********s intentionally damaging cars, I get enraged as if it actually happened to me. I should probably stop reading threads like that.

Their karma will catch up to them.

Sorry to hear about this terrible accident. Your car really took a hit from all that debris. Must have been metal pieces to cause those nasty scratches and dents.

I have learned that it's best to allow a lot of distance separation from the car in front of me as those rear wheels of cars and trucks can really sling objects a long way and with velocity.
