Last night I was motoring along...with the radio on, when all of the sudden....the SONG NAME and ARTIST start scrolling across the display on my radio! I have never seen this before. Very odd. Didnt know the MINI had this feature. It only happens on certain stations.

According to my dealer, the HK has a feature called PTY, which allows the radio to pick up info on a separate channel for display on the receiver. Some stations broadcast the info, but many don't.

I've never seen it display a song title or artist, though. It usually says something to identify a station, like "K-Rock" or "Z-100." (Those are just examples; don't know if K-Rock or Z-100 has PTY.)

 

Z 100 and KTU were the two stations last night that were displaying the song titles. I cant get KROCK to do anything, not even the call letters and POWER105 displays the call letters but not song/artst names.

Same thing started happening on my radio a few weeks ago. Just one particular station here in New Orleans, the classic rock station, does this. Funny thing is, sometimes, when they have their morning program on, it still shows the song name and artists that the station computer would be playing if it weren't for the morning program.
BTW. I have the standard radio, not the HK, but it also has PTY.

 

All MINI radios have RDS, which has support to decode song names and anything else sent out by the radio station. PTY is a station ID/Genre mode, and does not give you song names.

 

I notice that this info. shows up when I'm motoring in large markets and it's the larger stations that participate.

Q104.3 displays artist, song, and station on RDS here in the NYC area!

 

WWDC 101.1 here in Washington, DC just started doing that this week. I think it's nice to be able to see the title and artist since it's seldom announced any more these days.

Didn't know you got an S, ant. Huh. Guess I need to pay attention. Anyways, my radio started doing that a few weeks ago on the local oldies channel. FM's way of trying to catch up to XM... I've noticed fewer commercials, too.

 

Hey Ants! On the run to Montaulk I was telling everyone my radio was talking to me.

Then everyone moved away!

I always had RDS and PTY set, but it appeared that 104.3 started sending lots of text for a couple of minutes.

Now it's just back to artist, song and station.
