R50/53 Is it time to stop waving?
I see a few MINIs around every now and then and ever since I've had mine, I've always acknowledged the other driver with a thumbs up, wave, nod, whatever. The number that respond to me has always been low, but recently it seems like NO ONE responds. They just give me this quizzical look like I'm crazy. So has the time come for people like me to stop doing this? Is it related to the fact that there are slightly more around now, so we shouldn't "make such a big fuss" or something? Perhaps the non-responders are just too cool.
I have my MCS for bout 1 & 1/2 years now...
(I'm amazed when I think of how quickly that time flew bye...but that's another story
I will continue to.....wave...smile ... give a thumbs-up and enjoy driving around in my MCS .... regardless
Peace,
D

we always wave out here in southern cali, but very few if any have waved back... we figured that maybe we have to join a motoring club to find ppl who love their cars and didn't just pick out any old car... i say keep on wavin' what's the worst that can happen, you look silly or just look like you are rockin' out!!

I've only been motoring a month or so, and I have seen 5 or 6 other MINIs and I always wave when they can see me, and if they see or acknowledge me they wave back, but some don't see me. I will continue to. I like the culture on this NAM website. I like the support and brother and sister hood. and everything!!!!!
Most times there are few MINIs in your area-try to get to know them if you can. If you see a MINI and can make close contact-roll down your window and smile-make eye contact then wave. Usually people will be friendly.
Most times if other MINI drivers have tinted windows and you cannot see them hiding and talking on cell phones then I do not wave.
When I see any MINI owner with windows down then I always wave- it sort of a privacy thing- if they want to be seen then they try to be seen. When we do MINI rallys we usually roll our windows down.
I think it is a nice thing to wave and kids will wave to me all the time and I always wave back. Kids know better and who to wave to.

I've been driving a Jeep Wrangler for about 5 years. I'd say at least 75% of Wrangler owners wave at each other. I'm included in that. I didn't really understand at first why people were waving at me, at first. I bought the car from my brother, and I thought they might be waving because they were friends of his and thought HE was driving. Once I figured it out, I thought "yeah, I really like my Jeep too, so I'll wave). Now, even when I'm driving or riding shotgun in something other than a Jeep, I often wave at oncoming Jeeps by mistake. I won't have my MCS until July, but I already have the urge to wave at oncoming MINIs when I'm driving. I'm kind of a dork. You guys can stop waving at other MINIs if you want, but watch for a B/W or CR/W (haven't decided yet) waving at you (and accidentally waving at Jeeps) on his way from Portland to Detroit in July and August 2004!
I promise to wave (& have).
I also promise to keep it to more than one finger also.....
Does anyone do the "light flash" thing?
What is the official greeting / secret handshake ?
Is it just a wave or am I missing sumthing?

No one seems to be waving or giving the thumbs up in Miami much anymore. there are too many MINIs here to count and the car has lost a bit of it sinitial luster with other bystanders. New MINI owners don't seem to be "into" the culture around the car.
I still wave, flash the headlights and give the thumbs up, but not as much as I used to a year ago.
Its human nature folks..

I just honk twice and wave when on the road, everyone has acknowledged so far.....guess it also helps that more than half the Minis I see here (and all the Ss I've seen so far) are modded in 1 way or another. I saw this cute chick at the supermarket loading up her mini with groceries and I said "ey!" and she turned around and I said "nice mini babe!" and she's like "yeah, you too!".
Yeah, I have noticed the same thing. I love waving to other Mini's and I think it's a great community. The number of people that wave has been definitely lower, it's becoming a more popular car, and more people are getting it that don't really care, they just think the car is "cute" or whatever.
I'll always wave! (and I know all of you will wave back)

I think tere is definitely a ratio between numbers of Minis in any area and the liklihood of waving. The fewer around the more likely the one you see will get a wave from the driver. It is a rare sight still where I live and we usually look at each other in amazement first and then we wave and flash lights like long lost relatives.
There is one exception. A woman who won her's in a contest apparently wasn't worthy. She seems to have more interest in fluffing her hair or talking on her cellphone than even checking the others out.

I live in the boonies, so I still get a lot of attention from other people. I very seldom see another mini, but when I do they generally wave for flash their lights. I think the situation with some of the people is that the MINI has just become a car . They will probably be driving an SUV soon. We saw some this in the early days of the sports cars in the 50's and 60's when everyone waved to each other. As the number of cars increased the waves decreased and eventually the sports cars decreased. A shame.
If you are ever in Truckee wave and flash if you see a red MCS and it will wave, flash and beep back. Driving should be fun.

I always have...I always will...
I use the wave when the weather's nice and the windows are down and the light flash or horn when the windows are up. My light flash seems to have become more noticeable since I had the DRLs turned off. I might have to drop the beep beep when I get my air horns installed
I would guess that I get about 75% return acknowledgement...except when at higher speeds...sometimes by the time I see and greet the other car, they're in my rear view before they have a chance to respond
I always wave because there's always a chance the other person is one of the ones who wave back. I also still slip business cards on MINI windshields when I see them parked and if they call me (work # only!) I invite them to meet for coffee or to check out our local MINI club online...I've met 3-4 very cool people this way and 2 have become active with our club. We are also getting ready to print "GOTCHA" cards to slip under wipers with a link to our forum...some motorers aren't really aware of the "community" but love the idea once they find out about it.
==>all yu wavers, keep it up...don't turn to the dark side, don't let our "cult" die. Everyone you don't greet is a missed opportunity. If they think your a dork...well, what do they know??? If they do wave back...maybe you've just made a convert!!!
WAVE ON!!!!

Now that we've moved, we need to make up some new windshield cards to leave - as we've seen a bunch in the past week.
Let's Motor - Let's Wave - Let's Flash Our Lights...

I still waive, nod, or whatever... I get the same in return most of the time.
I'll agree that there are more MINI owners out there now... But it's not like a honda where every other car on the freeway is like yours just a different color.
(The most i've seen on one freeway is maybe 7... that's to AND from san diego from the long beach area)
Marinate on this: Corvettes have been around for a while and there are plenty from all generations... but my friend's cousin says that most owners still acknowledge each other on the road (and this coming from a new 20003 corvette owner).

Hello everyone,
I am new to the boards, but I have been lurking for a while. I say never stop waving, keep the spirit alive. I have been waving to fellow BMW enthusiasts for years, and I will never forget how happy I made somebody who was driving a beat up old BMW 2002 when I gave him a big thumbs up on the northern state parkway.
Made his day and mine.
So I say never stop waving, it doesnt matter if they wave back, or if you dont like waving flash the brights at somebody, if they are true MINI motorists they will appreciate it.

Welcome to North American Motoring, MPowerAce!
Nice anecdote! I always acknowledge other MINI motorers, either by waving out the open window, or open sunroof, flashing my lights, or tooting Wanda's horn. Just depends on my mood and how much time I have to make contact. If the other motorist sees me, they always smile, wave, toot or something.
After motoring since August, 2002, I still get a thrill everytime I see another MINI on the road, and I'm in West Los Angeles and have seen as many as 8 others in a single day! Also, I've found that the WRX drivers are pretty friendly, too. When I was at the gas station the other night, a nice young guy getting into his WRX complimented my MCS, and...gulp...I complimented his ride! Tee hee! Enthusiasts recognize other enthusiasts...at least, most of the time!
