100K Tune-Up Newbie on Budget

Hello to All Miniacs,

I have an R53 with close to 100,000 miles on it. I purchased the car last year with 78,000, so I don't really know what maintenance was done on it.

I don't have a lot of $$$, but I figured I should do a complete tune-up so that my car keeps running great for years to come. I am a complete newbie with those things, but I have a friend who can help with the basic stuff, for others I will bring the car to a mechanic.

Could you help me with list of things that you think I should do to keep my car running well? Also, maybe I should do some reasonable upgrades? Any advice on parts, brands, where to get them? I greatly appreciate your help!!!

Cheers to All!

Hello fellow Mini Newbie ,
So I just did a search and found this https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ms/how-to-340/ the search bar is your friend.
You need to change all fluids and filters plugs wires and clean out your intercooler.
I am sure i am missing some thing I just picked up my 2003 MCS LY/BL last weekend.

The tuneup is a good idea and a change of air and cabin filters. One note is that when you change the plugs you should do that with your engine cold after an overnight park. And torque them to 20 Ft/lbs. Don't let someone tell you that they can do it without a torque wrench or after you drive it to them. Trust us on that. As for what plugs, I use IK-20 DENSOs but everyone will have an opinion for you on that.

You should also change your trans oil. I used MTL. At 100,000 you should change your fuel filter. Not a "simple"job but there are good instructions around for that.

You should have a good tech check your shock towers, upper shock mounts and lower control arm bushings. At 100,000 miles they are most assuredly bad. A belt, tensioner and tensioner stop is also a good idea.

Not until all those are done should you consider "upgrades" IMHO.

Happy Motoring.

Rich

Hi, thanks for all the help and tune-up advice....
I would like to buy all the parts online of offline, but what is the best place to get them? What brands do you recommend for each part?

Thanks!

If you have the SA at your MINI dealer run your vin, you may be able to see what fluids were changed and when.

If that data is not available, John in Post #2 above is correct. ALL fluids need to be changed. Esp the brake fluid.

I would also check to make sure the power steering pump fan is working under your car, and that the low speed fan assembly is working properly. Both of these fans have known issues and a search in Stock Issues and Problems will glean much in that area.

Good luck with your new MINI
