This morning on CNN they had a new ranking of best and worst vehicle resale values by make in the U.S. Sorry but I was too groggy to catch whose they were, but possibly J.D. Power.

BMW came out best. Yes yes, I know Minis aren't among those counted as BMWs but suspect this will have some positive reflection upon those they make under the Cooper label. What do others think? Any info on projections about how much mine will hold of its value?

Actually, right now I plan for the two of us to become old classics together but I am curious.

From CNN.com, Money section:
"The single vehicle that has the best estimated retained value is BMW's Cooper Mini, which is expected to hold 62 percent of its value after three years. "

So lemme see....I paid $21,500 for my new '04 MCS (Before taxes and fees) so going by what ALG and the CNN article says, my car will still be worth $13,330 after 3 years?

Wow! that is pretty good! So a new MINI depreciates on the average of 12% to 13% for the first 3 years. Compare that to most cars that depreciate 25% to 30%+ on their first year alone!.

I think I had read another ALG.Com press release stating that the MINI Cooper's resale value after 5 years was in the ballpark of 49% to 50% off original MSRP. Imagine, driving a new MINI for 5 years, then selling it and practically getting half of what you paid back for it...not bad in the world of ever depreciating cars.

The heirs at Volkswagen and Chrysler must be baging their heads against the walls (The VW Beetle and PT Cruiser both of which have low resale values, rebates or incentives galore...both of which were supposed to be exclusive "Premium small cars" with high resale values...shame, shame!!!)

Did you get a base MCS?

My '04 MCS was ordered with no packages. I got MSFW, HK, Auto wipers and self dimming mirror, fogs, trip computer, chrome mirrors and front grille. That's about it.

In 1972 I bought a new BMW 2002 drove it for 5 years, put 77,000 miles on it and traded it for a new BMW 320i and got a trade-in allowance for the same amount I paid for it 5 years earlier. The only problem was a new 1972 BMW 2002 cost around $5,000. dollars and a new 1977 BMW 320i cost $13,000. dollars.

Still a pretty good deal though, Jimbo. That's taking both inflation and no deflation of your paid price into account.
