They can't drive it away without the key, right? If the chip isn't there, the engine won't start. I have contemplated many times printing a little sign to that effect to hang in my window.
Sorry to hear about the damage to your car, though!

Check out this thread re: engine immobilizer. This chip is also inside that flimsy plastic "wallet key" or whatever they call it.
I remember when some ***, and I know it was the little punk across the street, guaranteed, either drilled thru or used a flat head on my driver side lock. He stripped it out completly but didnt get in.
the guy sounds like a pro..... In a 3 series it is well known that one way to get into your car is to drill right through the lock cylinder. Since there is no keyhole on the pax side on the 3 series, a lot of people end up buying the cover on RHD cars and covering up their keyhole. It is still possible to steal your car because even the chip can be defeated (I really don't understand how....), but most likely the guy is trying to steal whatever you have in your car. I think by now thieves have all figured out that MINIs don't have a locking glove box.
btw jowannamini, are you in New Jersey/Philly area?
I used to follow BMW 3 series boards closely, and almost all instances of key lock being drilled out happened in the parking lot of several large and famous shopping malls in the area.

never mind jowannamini, you ARE in New Jersey.
I hope this link works.....

It appears that thieves enter your car by drilling out the key locking cylinder. What they are looking for is any info in the manual that would help them order a key from BMW. Once they obtain your key, there is nothing to stop them from stealing your car..... Since they probably can find out where you live, where you park you car at night, etc etc..... Kinda scary isn't it!?
I guess breaking a glass would require a lot of clean-up once they steal your car, so they go for the least damange - drill your lock cylinder out.....

The bastards!! May he/she/they develop a bad case of flesh eating disease !!!! I etched my VIN # to all my windows the day I picked up my Mini. The kit is only $30, and hopefully a thief will pick an easier target. All the glass would have to be changed out (about $3,000), and the VIN can't be removed without obvious sanding/buffer marks.
To make an extra key (pretty costly) I thought all you need is a VIN number and an excuse.
No info from the manual is going to help- I have one in front of me and there is no identifying information.
Hopefully the dealer knows something about the car and who the owner should be, but what if you are going cross country and in a different and new place for a week. I'm not sure how long it takes to make a new key, which the thieves can use to steal your car.
I have a Clifford 7000 alarm that overrides the key and if you do not have the aftermarket alarm remote and get into the car with the key only the car will cut ignition and the starter and the alarm will sound.
Better not loose that Clifford remote.
