Is it ok to redline?

I have a 2002 MCS (81400 mil). I was wondering if Mini's can be redlined from time to time. When I try to merge onto the freeway I always seem to encounter rednecks with there big, raised trucks. and they wont let me merge , so I drop a gear and redline to get in front . Is this a bad this for the engine? Or are Minis built for that?

Yes, you can redline the engine but do it only with the engine warmed up to normal operating temp. Use the oil temp gauge as the guide. Normally, this would mean 15-20 min of city or 10 min of freeway driving depending on your location.

Redline normally means the maximum engine speed, and should not stay there for an extended time.
In other words, yes run it to the redline from when needed or to have fun. I do.

lifespan, and crank revolutions

there's an amusing theory (http://www.uh.edu/engines/epi1834.htm) about an upper limit for heartbeats that applies across species

if there is something analogous for cars, one might argue that the car will last longer if the higher gears are used where it is reasonable

i personally stay below 5k on the street - usually below 4k

in competition however things are different.

what if we should expect the engine to last for 500,000,000 turns?

at 2,480 revs/mile (top gear) that would carry us over 200,000 miles

3rd gear, pulling 75 mph, would go a much shorter distance...

The rev limiter will stop you from damaging the engine. I run to the limit whenever needed or desired. The sounds are worth the trip. Vvvrrroooooom!

I must admit, I hit redline every day. Just make sure your engine is at operating temps and check your oil level regularly. Have fun

Hmmm... don't scare me. I still like to jog, swim and hike occasionally. Swimming is the worst. My heart could never beat fast enough.

the argument there is that a person who exercises trades short periods of rapid heartbeat for a lower average resting pulse -- thereby coming out ahead!

not the case for Minis however...

I like to redline mine in 1st gear all the time. Just to sound like I'm going fast but to be sure I don't violate NAM rules and regulations. Because I would feel so ashamed if I did.

It loves it.
7 MILLION RPM sounds pretty scary to me. My MINI could never handle that. You must have some stickers I don't.

j/k bud

I have two identical 2007 Cooper-S to sell ... tires, service history, everything is IDENTICAL

#1 is my fun car .... I drive the hell out of it and run the red line A LOT .... I brake hard, stomp the gas, pull max G's on the on/off ramps . . . .

#2 is my daily driver, I drive it like a normal driver .... don't think I've ever hit the red line

They are for sale at the same price ..... which one do you want to see?

++++++++++++

is red-line bad for the engine .... given that you ASKED you must suspect it is.

or

what engine is built to be red-lined? A pure racing engine for sure . . .

on the other hand I have a rebuilt and heavily modified engine in my '79 .... what IS the red-line???? I dunno

just food for thought

This thread is getting boring.

What I want to know is:

Is it ok to redline in reverse?

An awful lot of tuned MINIs running around out there with raised rev limiters... and I haven't seen them blowing up unless someone does something stupid (like shift from 6th to 2nd)...... Tritec's are pretty darn tough.

I have to admit I've redlined all my MINI's. And not ashamed one bit.

I've been hitting the redline almost daily in my 03 MC, a little over 107,000 miles ago. Oh, and I'm not ashamed either
