Speedometer/Tachometer Question

Just got my first car, 2003 MINI Cooper S, yes i paid for it all myself.

I've read through the manual and read a little online and a question i have still hasn't really been answered.

I'm wondering if the tachometer can display my speed. Its become annoying to look at the speedometer to get my speed. I read in the manual that you need the upgraded obc to have it read but the manual wasn't very thorough in explaining the hwole deal to me.

If there isnt a way that the tachometer can tell me the mph, is there another way that i can get it to display mph, or would i have to get another gauge?

for you guys that want a pic,

On my 05 MC there is a button on top of the turn signal stalk that scolls through a number of displays, including speed. Congates on your MINI, and welcome!

First off: welcome!

Now, you should be able to press the button on the end of the turn signal and cycle through modes. I'm not sure if this works in the 03 model or not, and you may need to get the OBC upgraded to do that if the function isn't there. I have an 07 so it probably has a new obc and setup.

Anyone with an 03 know if this is a default option?

My button is not on the end, it is about 1" in from the end and on the top of the stalk.

I was looking at people's aftermarket gauges installed and some of the stalks appear to not have the button I'm talking about. I'm not sure if the 03 has this. Anyone with 03 have any comments?

Looking at the '03 Owners Manual I found that the obc in that model (without the Navigation System option) the available display is:

Outside temperature, cruising range, average
fuel consumption, average vehicle speed.

I suspect the instantanious speed display came with a later model.

If there is no option to display mph on an '03, you can always purchase a scanguage II which will have other guages that you can display.

There is a thread here about an early MINI that did not have the OBC button and the owner was able to purchase the stalk with the button and have the dealer initialize the display. It now works.

Do a search for it.
