I read an eval

and RP made a few more peak HP, and was slighly less viscous for any given grade. It's good stuff. I run red line in my Mini and Mustang, and whatever is on sale in my MDX! If I'm out of Red Line and I need some oil fast, I get some Royal Purple as a local shop has it for a decent price.

FWIW, I found Red Line 5W30 for $107 a case on Amazon, and offer on my blogs aStore (I make a few bucks from each sale). When I find good Amazon deals, I just post them up there so others can take advantage as well.

If you all would like me to add some Royal Purple products there, let me know which one and I'll add it on.

Matt

Good to hear! It definitely made my decision. The car had Mobil 1 since new to 54k miles... I feel bad it had to go even that long!

Watch out for that comparo article...

it's incomplete to say the least. It tests just one facet in the oil performace matrix and implies that this is the only grounds on which to make a lubricant decision. For what it's worth, that's the exact same test equipement that the Dura Lube (I think that was it) additive claimed to have magic properties when added to any motor oil.

If you want much more complete information on oils, I suggest doing reading at www.bobistheoilguy.com, probably the best source of information on oil there is.

I remember when that article came out. The Mazda forum I was on got all excited about it. Shortly after, the magazine that published it issued a retraction that stated that they agreed that the article didn't account for many of the intricacies of a modern engine and that really there was no way to declare a 'winner'.

I've run RP in all of my cars for the last 4 years, and have been very happy with it, but that's mainly because a friend's shop carries it and he gives me a decent deal on the oil.

I agree with Dr Obnxs, read BITOG, it's the best source for this kind of info.

I realize the Timken test is not an end-all be-all for determining how the oil will function in our engines... that should be taken into account with any artificial test. However, it is a consistent test with which to compare oils, and it is based on metal-to-metal friction, which is the purpose of motor oil (though in a very different environment). I would rather follow result of this test than a bunch of people discuss which oil they "think" is the best, which introduces a huge pile of extraneous variables to the equation.

Thanks for an introduction to BITOG, I had never heard of that until now!

But

the Timken test (first time I've heard the name) isn't really representative of wear surfaces in engines. Yes it measures something, but not something that is all that relavent in a normal engine. It's more of a measure of damage in failure situations.

BITOG forums have the same problem lots of forums do. Way back when it started it was pretty much only comparitve test of oils, and discussion of oil evaluation. That info is still there, but takes a little longer to find, bummer.

I have nothing against Royal Purple motor oil, but I do not put any oil in my car that does not specify its HTHS number (and RP does not divuldge this number).
