Touch up paint - expensive?

I need to touch up a small boo-boo on my 2004 PW MCS. Called the dealer to confirm they have the touch up paint in stock, which they do, but the price is $38! Is this what everybody else has paid?

But did the color match? This is for a parking lot ding in the middle of my driver's side door. Conspicuous location.

I bought some today from Mini of Manhattan. $58 for dark silver. I wasn't very happy about that.

I think that being able to fix small scratches and rock chips is worth the money spent on factory touch up paint.

define factory paint

MINI doesn't make paint, they buy it. If you have the color code you too can buy it from many many different sources. Now it is true that some places do a better job than others mixing the paint but that's true when you buy the bottle from the dealer as well.

over the years and for many different vehicles I've had good luck with this place for pens, bottles and rattle cans
http://www.automotivetouchup.com/ excellent track record for color match IME
1/2 oz base color is $10 & 1/2 clear $5 (plus shipping)

and I've sure used 'Duplicolor' from the parts store with success plenty of times and even have the 02 dark silver from MINI on the shelf - bought b4 most other suppliers had the formula yet.

When I need bulk to spray, as little as a pint, I look for the local Sherwin-Williams Automotive supplier - in your phone book yellow pages - this is where your body shops gets theirs if they use SW. You might also find Dupont and others under automotive paint in the yellow pages. (I've also used rattle cans fm auto-touchup and duplicolor for small jobs but prefer to use my own guns, or even an airbrush as rattle cans have crappy nozzels and often sputter and spit)

If you are going with bottle or pen you may want to look into Dr Colorchip or LANGKA
http://www.langka.com/
http://www.drcolorchip.com/
I use LANGKA but reading the two, they are similar systems

speaking of paint codes.....thru 09 model year:

you also get clear with the mini touch up paint, I also paid 38 dollars, totally worth it for a perfect match and no hassle of shipping, don't be cheap.

I've got a T-Shirt with MINI on it ... did they make that too?

I give up ... pay the MINI price and apply blobs ... then come back and ask what went wrong.

Best info I've found so far is here:

http://www.paintscratch.com

If you're using a pen:

If you're using a brush:

Biggest problem I'm having is finding the paint code for my black roof top. Can't seem to figure out how to find the sticker on the left fender extension.

Anyone know how to get to it?

paint code label only covers the body color IME .... not any 'trim'

your answer is in the link I provided

provided you know how to read it ....

application = misc' .... means ime other than primary body

aka

the top ....

668, 59049, Miscellaneous, Jet Black, 05 - 09

try code 668 ......

buy a bottle and paint a test strip .... if I were doing a job on this, it is what I'd try first.

here's the reply I sent to a question on a different board in response to a specific question about LANGKA

I have Langa and you are welcome to come play with it. It works but it is not a 1 minute process. You still need to do a bit of work. What you really want to do is use your pen or any other chip repair pant which will leave the tell-tale blob and let that dry for 12 to 24 hours. That is: paint your chips Fri evening then come over on Sat and use the Lan' to smooth it down.

I had pens but stopped using them as I found 1 - they usually put down too much paint and 2 - the tips got sloppy after the first use. I just apply the paint with a really fine artists brush - like a 000; others recommend a toothpick or a match stick as cheaper alternatives. Don't throw the pens away ... try it...it may work for you. You prob' don't have the same ones I did. And if you don't like it....use the pen to put a blob of paint on a business card and then pick that up with a brush to apply. Have some mineral spirits around too as I find all most all touchup paint to be really thick....and you want to use spirits to clean the area of all wax b4 you paint.

Just remember that you really end up working one chip at a time and that takes time. Go to the Langka web site and read the how to's there....

I'd imagine the favorable Lan' article has just a bit to do with the fact they became an advertiser.... Dr Colorchip is a similar tool - I've only used the LAngka one tho. It's what I bought first. Others swear by it, but I wonder if it is what THEY bought first.

change of plans...

Paint pens Blow. ill be getting the nail polish bottle. also, its too dang cold now to really do much with the paint.

also, some of the chemicals in the langka kit leak. as in eat thru the seal on the bottle. word from the wise: keep stored in upright position.

i just paint penned a few big spots and painted plastidip strips on my car to distract me from the crappy nicks.
