R50/53 Jingly noise from under the hood
Jingly noise from under the hood
Picked up a used 03 MCS w 42k mi. on it today. Runs great but I have a concern. There is a low volume jingly noise( almost like keys rattling) coming from what sounds like the area below the super charger on the passenger side. The pulley directly beneath the SC sounds like it may be the culprit. Can someone tell me what that pulley operates? If it operates the SC, is this a sound you might expect if the pulley was going out? I am curious if this type of noise could be made by the SC itself and if this means I may be in the market for a SC soon?

I could be totally wrong but I think that's the crank pulley. The OEM crank pulley is built around a harmonic damper. Some MINI cases, the 2 separated and can start to separate; if that is the case, it will need replacement. If I am wrong, somebody correct me.
That is possible, It can also be the supercharger itself.
normally the "jingling" noise is from the metal tab that runs down the center of the spring on the belt tensioner. take a screw driver or something long enough to reach the tab and push on it with engine running to see if it stops.
NOTE: be careful not to put anything against spinning pulleys or belt!
The tab should be sticking out the top of the spring on the tensioner.
Good luck
