On my 2004 MCS with 87K, the thingy between the hinges on the driver's side door no longer functions at all, and there is nothing to keep the door open when I exit. How can that function be restored? TIA.

funny ... a friend of mine who I do MINI maintenance work for has the same problem and we're trying to find time to attack it.
If you look at the part in question it would appear the lack of function would be due to the edges wearing down ..... my thought is to go at the edges with a Dremel and square up the 'slopes' allowing the sprung wheel to grab
My customer just wants to replace the part?!?!? What's fun in that?
If we find time to do anything I'll let ya know!

I have the same problem! Just on the drivers side (makes sense, it gets more use)
I also have a permanent bruise on my left shin thanks to that

Thinking that I would experience this dilemma some day, I found and saved this door resistance repair link that I hope may help.
Thanks BuzzSaw; very helpful. Remains unclear whether this can be accomplished without removing the door inner panel. Anybody?
Heh, I'm ready to replace mine simply because the door is too hard to open... and close. The mechanism is incredibly stiff, regardless of lubrication.
