R50/53 Satellite radio question
Satellite radio question
I tried to get a satellite radio for my '06 MCS--they (Best Buy) said I would have to go through my dealer to get the tuner, who in turn told me it would be $800. I want satellite radio, but am unwilling to lay down eight bills for it. Any suggestions? Thanks--
get one of the small universal units that can be put in any car for less than $100. Plugs into cig lighter for power, run a wire up to the roof for antenna and fm transmitter for sound which are usually built in. I think I payed $50 for mine a few years ago. I i swap it between my MINI and work truck every day.
XM or Sirius??
I have a XM Blitzsafe unit that I am taking out of my 06 MCS. Works great, tuner hides in the right rear boot compartment, plays through your stock MCS head unit.
Here is the link to both peices of the Blitzsafe system:

If this is the type of system you are interested, I plan to sell mine for $100 plus shipping cost. Let me know if you are interested.

I got a great Pioneer XM unit in my '04 from Best Buy. Maybe the '06 is not as easy an install for some reason? I would get a second professional opinion if I were you.
Although it eventually fit with really NO problems, I bought the unit at Best Buy and got pissed off at their install guys, and so I took the stuff I'd bought there to an indi I know, and they put it in no sweat for a not-exorbitant fee.

I second the blitzsafe set-up. Put it in my car. Works perfectly. No afermarket units to clutter the dash. Great solution.

While the SiriusXM iPhone App is great, it doesn't have a lot of stuff that the regular service carries. If you're interested in sports or howard stern you'll be out of luck on the iPhone App.
While not a professional I do have an opinion.
I have to say that the Blitzsafe XM Direct is a great way to get satilite radio into your MINI. I've had mine for 3 years & wouldn't be without it. Now that XM & Sirius are the same company you should be able to get whatever you wish on your radio.

A really easy way, (though maybe not as perfectly neat as everyone else), has been working for me for the past four years: I mounted an XM Roady XT to the cup holder. I connected the line to the AUX connector, carefully routed all wires and all is great.
BTW: I've been a Lifetime XM Subscriber... consider it if you think you'll have Sat Radio for a long time... you'll save a TON of money over your lifetime - as long as Sat radio is around that is, lol. I'm hopeful. And I'm usually tuned into First Wave as well... I loved Beyond Jazz (fusion, etc) and Music Lab (progressive) but XM dropped those channels (bastards!).

Raider60, from what I recall it cost right around $365.00 for the lifetime subscription for me because I was already paid up for two years when I upped it to the lifetime subscription.
By next February, it will be paid off at a dollar a day (the way I computed it).
Confused? The real total fee might be something like $399.00... Give them a call; they'll be glad to tell you. Good luck!

Plus, you need to subscribe to the premium service and will only work where you have phone service. No phone service, no Sirius, which in my area is a lot.
