R50/53 The everything was OK today thread.
I don't own a Mini (yet?) but I'd love to get an R53 soon.. seeing this thread was quite encouraging - I'm the kinda person who'll research something to death before diving in, and well, coming from JDM, my mini research was getting a little depressing.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Coming up soon, an LSD
'04 MCS, 104K manual, One of the best car I've owned and the most enjoyable car to drive. It still drives strong, easy on tires, no rattles, everything works. I never have to add oil between oil changes, @7-10k. Only one issue I have, the windshield cracked at 102k miles for no apparent reason, it started at the bottom center.
Not exactly everything was okay today, but I have strut tower reinforcement plates and a replacement belt+idler pulley in the mail to fix the belt and/or pulley squeal, the old R53 isn't leaking anything at all, and on the onramp on the way home for work today I put the pedal on the floor and made the traction control kick in when I shifted from first to second. Made me smile: that's why I bought the car in the first place.
I've had something rattling around in my engine bay for a while now, right at the clutch master cylinder and firewall. Needless to say, it's been driving me nucking futs! I've always suspected a piece of a tool or rock or something was back where I couldn't get at it.
So, finally after buying an air compressor and blow gun, I went to town blowing crap around. After a few minutes, loe and behold! I found the little bastard! An old rusty Phillips head screwdriver bit! Fished it out with a magnet. Hoping that eliminated the rattle.
I knew I wasn't crazy!

That isn't proof you're not crazy, just proof you weren't hearing things that weren't there....

I've got a couple nylock nuts from my bonnet vents that I butterfingered and which fell into the back part of the bonnet bracing somewhere, but thankfully, they are wedged tightly enough wherever they are to not rattle. One finally did get loose, and fell out last month sometime.

Maybe I should knock less vigorously....

I'm at 110k currently on my 2003 MCS. Still love this car better than any other one I've owned since the early '80s when I started (legally
) driving....C ya,

Ever since I wrecked the car
(and had it repaired) my car has been great. I always had constant electrical problems with it prior. It's been problem free for the past 18 months. A real pleasure to drive. I just passed 100,000 miles on my '05.
3 days and 802 miles later, MisterQ is home and happily splattered with bugs after driving the Blue Ridge Parkway Tour with Tar Heel Minis. :D
Still stock as the day I drove him out of the showroom ... 118,000 miles n counting.

Frugal Finds
Today after dropping the teens off at the movies to see "Superman", I ventured to a nearby import salvage yard and found a R50 gas cap (the one I have's stem ball was missing) and one mini carpeted mat for my drivers side. The other one was a lil tattered, both for a total of a whopping $15.
Just got my mini the day before yesterday, took it out for my first drive, 70 miles later it ran great, everything worked, even the flat tire indicator worked right because the dealer didn't fill the tires up right. (Now fixed) engine sounds good, warms up quick and is a pleasure to drive.
My thanks to the OP and all follow-up posters for this encouraging thread. I jut took delivery of a '14 Roadster S, so I'm relatively new to MINI. After reading all the doom and gloom threads, it's great to see a thread by satisfied MINI owners who motor on with little, if any, major repair issues. It gives me hope that my Roadster will spend more time on the road than the shop. Thanks, guys!
I was following a bit too closely to the car in front of me on an icy road. Instead of rear ending the person when they stopped I went for the curb. Hopped said curb and was pretty deep in the snow left by the plows.
A bit of good rocking and I was out. No body damage and everything was okay!
