Minus number when starting your car

Whenever I start my car, I always see a negative number appear then disappear on the screen where it has your milelage, right underneath your speedometer. At first I noticed -100, then -150, then -300. What does this numer signify??

Also on a different note, what does the button right next to your emergency break do?

That number is the service indicator. When your MINI gets an oil change/inspection it is supposed to be reset then it will count down to the next service interval. If it's displaying a negative number, it is a)either past due for service or b) wasn't reset at last service.

On my 2005 cabrio, the button beside the e-brake is the reset button for the tire monitor system.

I can't get the service interval to reset, so I just ignore it. I do all my own maintenance, so the indicator is up to some huge negative number. The car's computer is none the wiser.

Although it bugs me to see -2200 & counting when I start my MINI, I just can't get that blasted thing to reset. Oh well it's no problem because I do my own maintenance & write it down in a log. Now I want to see how large a - negative number I can get to display.

Reset Oil Service Light

I didn't write this, but I did copy it from NAM & email it to myself so I can store it in my MINI file. Now I will copy my email for others...Hopefully this will help you all.

Resetting Oil Service Light on your 2002 - 2006 MINI Cooper and Cooper S, and 2007 - 2008 MINI Convertibles:
1) Press and hold the trip button
2) Insert key and turn to position 1
3) Watch for RESET to appear
4) Release the button, then press & hold it again
5) Wait for the RESET to flash
6) Release the button, and then press & release (once only)
7) Service interval should then be reset to next interval

If that didn't work, try this:
1. Push the Trip Button
2. Turn ignition key to position 1 and 51A will appear to left of mileage
3. Release trip button
4. Wait 3 seconds
5. Push trip button
6. Wait (5-8 seconds) for RST to appear in left corner
7. Release trip button
8. Push trip button
9. 15000 will appear as new service interval
10. Release trip button

Or this:

1. Press and hold the trip odometer button.
2. Insert car key and turn it to the fi rst position (not the second position).
3. You will see 51A come up in the trip odometer area.
4. Release, then press and hold again.
5. Watch for the word “RST” to appear on the Odometer indicator.
6. Release, then press and hold again.
7. Wait for the “RST” message to fl ash.
8. Release, and then press & release (once only).

I think you forgot the "chant & dance" step of the procedure.

I've tried those procedures before to no avail. Once, at the dealer, a service guy said to my inquiry that only their ecu machines could reset it and that I would have to prove that service was completed by me for them to reset it. So I left, having completed my reason for the vist - turn off daytime running lights to eliminate stereo feedback tone.

Hmmm... Not4no1's procedure works on mine.

Guys, the procedure in the OM will work. You do have to follow it exactly. It is finicky. But it will work. Keep at it.

I've reset mine many times, no problem, using method 1, in Not4no1's post.

Mark - where in the Owner's Manual is the procedure? I have an '06 MCSc and can't find it.

I have an '06 MCSC as well, and it's not in the Owner's Manual. I have a link to the procedure bookmarked in my browser.

Sorry guys, I thought I had seen the procedure in the OM. I must have been thinking of the Bentley Service Manual. Here is a scan for posterity:

Owners Manual

I think the original poster needs to read his Users Manual!

Resetting the service indicator is a piece of cake. It takes 5 seconds. But then I have a 2004 so things were easier on those models.

Resetting the indicator isn't particularly hard on any of the models, but MINI neglected to include the procedure in the Owner's Manual, which is why so many people end up asking for the procedure here in the forum.

The procedure is NOT in the User's Manual... at least not in mine (2006). The scanned image above is from the Bentley Service Manual.

And yes... it's quite easy.

As far as aftermarket service manuals go, the Bentley is the best I've ever seen. Worth every penny.

In the Haynes too for a fraction of the cost of the Bentley.

Oft poo-poo'd here but classic owners have survived on Haynes for a long time ....

I was in Pep Boys yesterday looking for a Haynes but couldn't find it. You sure they published one for the new Minis?
