R50/53 Minus number when starting your car
Oil reset for lazybones...
like myself.
I just use the Peake Research tool R5/EMX.
A couple buttons to press and you're done.
As a bonus, it's nice to have around WHEN
you get those darn CEL's.

This where I got mine.
ebay. Sometimes you'll see it posted for cheaper but you have to deal with outbidding everybody. Then you'll be close to retail price and some are also used. So far this is the cheapest I found with free shipping. and brand new.

*All* of the service events that the OBC tells you about include an oil change, so whatever the counter displays is the mileage remaining until the next oil change.
The sequence goes:
"Oil Service"
"Inspection I"
"Oil Service"
"Inspection II"
and then the cycle repeats. The "Oil Service" events are just oil changes. The "Inspection I" and "Inspection II" services include an oil change plus checking a bunch of stuff and replacing a few parts.

it says the next service is in 9,500+ miles. no oil change until almost 10k??!?! Also, there is no minus symbol before it.
You only get the minus sign if you've gone past the recommended interval. Your counter will count down to zero and then start counting up with a minus sign to tell you how many miles ago you should have had the service performed.
9,500 miles remaining isn't uncommon. When you have a service performed and the counter is reset, it starts off displaying 15,000 miles until the next service. Depending on your driving habits, that interval may get shortened or lengthened over time (usually, it's lengthened).
On my car, the OBC-recommended intervals for my last two services have been in the 21-22k range.

ok thanks for the clarification. I cant believe they say 15,000 miles for an oil change on these cars. All of my last cars were old late 80's cars where we changed the oil every 3k. I'm sure I'll change the oil even before 10k though.
