I have a dilemma and I need some advice. In July, I walked into my local Mini dealer and to my surprise, a silk green mini with all the extras became available minutes before I arrived at the dealer. When I took a look at the car, I had to have it! I got the car two days later and I love the car. Unfortunately, while I was getting the car serviced last week, I ran into my sales advisor and he took me for a ride in the MCS. I became hooked!! Would it be crazy to trade in or sell my mini and get an MCS? Thanks for listening

Go for it. I did exactly that. Some people may :???: but I am so much happier with the S that it was worth the money it cost.

It depends....if you think it is honestly worth giving up your Cooper then go ahead and do it....I just love the silk green...it is such a cool color but unfortunately unavailable in the Cooper S so if color matters to you that can be a consideration. Which body style do you like better? Because that could be a consideration. If the 6 speed tranny is really that important to you, then switch....I personally don't think they feel too incredibly different from one another. The biggest factor that made me choose the Cooper over the S in the beginning was the body style....I like the Cooper style better. You need to think about what you like in each car and then make a decision based on that.

Cheers!

Before taking the plunge, check to see if your insurance premium will or will not increase considerably over your current Cooper's premium.

Also make sure the dealer will give you a fair trade in allowance for your Cooper. If they won't, and the MCS itch continues, then try to sell your Cooper on your own and perhaps make a few extra bucks on the side.

Current Cooper S owners have reported cold engine start issues. It would be a good idea to find out where currently BMW/MINI is in issuing a final fix.

Also having a Supercharged vehicle means higher maintenance and fuel costs down the road.

Personally, I would keep the Cooper a while longer but if the MCS has stolen your heart and wallet, then go for it.

Have fun!

If you can afford it, do what YOU want to do.

Wait a year or two to trade in for the S. The chrome grill on the Cooper is much better looking than the body-colored grill on the S. And the chrom trim package on the Cooper is also great. And the hidden gas cap. In the end it's up to you, but wait on it a bit since most likely you'll be losing money on the trade-in/conversion. I'm going to wait until the S is more readily available and at MSRP, then maybe switch over if they have the chrome grill by then  . Might be a year or two or three, but if you still want it then, go for it. They're both great fun, so you can't lose either way really. Good luck!

By the way, I was told by a MINI USA rep that they do not have a fix for the S's cold start issue just a few days ago.

Isn't this an earlier build problem anyways? I have yet to have a problem starting my MCS...

but my generic rule of thumb...

City/Traffic Driver? MC

City/Highway/Country Driver? MCS

if you are going to trade in at the dealer.....then prepare yourself to bend over first...lol!

Wait a year or two till all the bugs are out of all the minis....by then they might even have an upgraded S performance package that gives the mini the real boost it can handle, as it stands now, in my opinion, I saw no difference in handling and only slight performance boost at the upper ranges over 3500rpms...do have to admit have a friend that has a cooper and he had the superchips tuning and it definitely felt faster than my S off the line...so for $300 you could do that, but I personally would worry about warranty concerns....obviously he isn't worried...lol!

2002 is the only year that the Silk Green color was used for the new Cooper. They have discontinued the color. So it will be the rarest color of all. If you can afford it, keep the silk green and in a few years get a MCS. The Silk Green Cooper will be a collector's car in the future and I would suspect command a higher dollar amount than the others.

I know that is going to bring up many more posts but think bout it, it is true.

How come MINIUSA's sales literature still lists Silk Green Metallic as being available in the Cooper for the 2003 MY? For '03, MINI is offering 14 colors including Solid Gold and Candy Blue. Silk Green is still listed there.

Of course, do what YOU want to do... if you weren't an independent thinker, you never would have bought a MINI in the first place... but if you want a similar situation to yours...

I was originally going to buy a MINI Cooper, but had to hold off for a while due to problems with selling my old car, etc... Then I later tested a S, an was glad that I waited. Now that I have my S, and not just for a little test drive, but harder driving, I wonder how I managed with all my other vehicles only having 5 gears? 6 makes you feal like you're driving an insane rocketship.
