R50/53 Toggle Switches: What do they do?
My mini doesn't arrive until November and I'm wondering if I'm going to fill up all the spaces where the toggles are on the dash. Does anyone have *all* of the toggles and can you tell me what their functions are (so I can determine which toggles I'm getting)?
Also...interesting story: My dealer told me that another guy found out that he wasn't going to have all the toggles so he ordered an extra toggle and glued it onto his dash.
(note: this "guy" was not me, I swear...I'm just curious)
Thanks!

Welcome!

I may have that order slightly askew, but the point I think is that there are two blank switch locations if you don't have front fog lights.
But I'm curious...what difference does it make if you have blank switch locations? I suppose you could glue toggles all over the dash and the headliner and it'd look like the cockpit of a 747...but what's the point?
ps -- you may also want to get a pdf copy of the owners manual (link is somewhere on this site). That'll sort of show you what's where.

I guess some people think the more stuff the better. My father used to build street rods for a living and he always made fun of people with all kinds of crazy stuff on their car by saying, "Look Frank, if it don't go, chrome it". He was right. Too many little gadgets look stupid. Cleaner is better.

So what do you think that blank spot is? Is that those extra bug-eye type racing lights maybe?
As for the point: toggle switches are cool.
...and from a design perspective, it looks better having an equal balance of toggles on right and left...the missing ones (in the showroom) looked funny to me.
Thanks for the info!

I agree the balance of the toggles is a must. There is a fine line though. In 65 the cockpit of the stingray looked great, but the aftermarket parts and the "Mako shark prototype" looked just absurd. I love vettes, but thpeople have really chopped them to bits with the Calloway body kits and stuff like that. Too much is too much. Sometimes less is more!
I will rx my MCS soon and would like to know, do the toggles for the rallys come with it or is that an extra aftermarket purchase?
Cheers

Hummmm...Lmini, I guess I should read my own owners manual
I thought that everyone had either traction control OR stability control, and that the switch location would turn off whichever you had (I had a Volvo V70 AWD that you could turn off the traction control if so-desired). I think you're right about the rally lights.
I'm planning on installing the switch for either the rear oil slick generator or carpet tack spreader in my blank spot. I haven't decided which.

In the blank nearest to the driver's side window I will be installing the toggle for the aftermarket flame thrower. I will be putting the switch for my new super hydrolics that I am installing in the area where the rally light toggle would be.
I thought the empty toggle, to the left of the fog light one, was another example of great MINI design. It's a perfect spot for my hair clip! And while this may sound not very macho, it's better (esp, for my husband) to not be driving a car with a ponytail holder (a "scrunchy) on the shifter.
>>There are lots of times that I have wished I had a passenger ejector seat....depending on who was riding in the car with me at any given time.
I want something off the front to dismember and toss away those drivers in the left lane doing 50 mph in a 65!! In Ohio, I do believe that people are taught to drive in the left lane while they are in driving school. Oh, and if they are going to turn left in, oh, say, 3 or 4 miles, they will whip out in front of you into the left lane and be driving waaa slower than you are! UGH! Sigh, I guess that's what I get for driving Mach 3!
Can't wait to get my MINI and start playing with toggles and buttons and tigers and bears oh no! LOL

What about the people that drive for miles and miles with their turn signal on? Do they need to change lanes or what???? Are they turning any time soon!?!?!? Is there an aftermarket option to take care of those drivers, too?
Have a friend thats going to the UK next month to participate in the Italian Job rally. While he's there he will check on the availabilty of the "missing" toggle switch. If the price is right I'll have him pick me up one. If for no other reason to use down the road on some driving lights I might add. I don't like the empty spot in the row of switches.
I would love to be able to put something there to fill in the blanks as well....even if the blanks were symmetrical it would make me feel a little better.....wow....how **** did that sound!
>>the blank is for the rear fog lights. an illegal option in the US, but a regular thing in the UK. the rally light switch appears below the steering i believe.
Illeagal in the US? Weird - my 2001 Mercedes C-240 has a rear fog light.

>>They're not illegal in the US, just not often offered. My '99 Volvo V70 has a rear fog light, but it was European build and an overseas delivery car.
Not just on overseas delivery Volvos...I had a V70 AWD delivered right here in the good-old USA and it had one too. (they're all built in europe, btw).
I think it's a Volvo safety thing to include them across the line and for all markets. Gotta love that safety thing.
