Here's a new one. I started my car after work and heard an odd whirring sound that seemed to emanate from the steering column or just behind it. For some reason, I had my CD player off and noticed it so I have no idea how long this may have been occurring. It almost sounds like my home computer with the whirring and chattering, but it's definitely not in the rattle family. The noise continued throughout my drive home. What the heck is it, and am I in imminent danger of blowing my car to pieces?

How about some more clues?

Does it do it more when you are stopped, and crank the
steering wheel? (The power-steering pump)

Does it do it at 55 MPH going straight? (Who knows)

Does it only do it when you are actually turning the
steering wheel, and stops when you stop turning the
wheel? (Steering column universal joints)

Does it only do it when you are NOT putting turning pressure
on the steering wheel? (Again, loose universal joints)

 

It's late, so this may be for our West Coast friends only. It seems to be just as loud when parked as it is during driving conditions. Odd, huh?
I'll post a solution if my dealer gives me one. Until then I'll follow my brother's advice: "Weird sounds are bad."
