As i have had too much time on my hands awating for my car to come in..i have been trying to get as much stuff done in advance as i could, including talking to my insurance agent about car insurance..I currently have a Chrysler Sebring Convertible 1999 with a perfect (knock on wood) driving record..i was paying about 1500 a year thru Allstate..now with the Mini they quoted me as almost 2000 a year...does this make any sense??...they claim it is because the car is made overseas and parts are hard to come by and also they seem to think it is a risk to be stolen...why more then any other car out there....any thoughts?

the insurance is based on the msrp of the vehicle......115 hp isn't going to get you a Z 28 insurance quote....lol...get another company, you will still be in good hands, laugh

My insurance company's charging me about $800 a year and I live in San Francisco, one of the most expensive car insurance markets in the US. I'll echo the above -- get a new insurer!

I agree with everyone else...I pay $360 for 6 months with Mercury (clean driving record in So Cal)...it would be a good idea to shop around. Good luck!

The salesperson I spoke to at the MINI dealer told me to make sure that the insurance agent knows the MINI is a three-door hatchback. He (the salesperson) said that he has heard of some insurance companies classifying the MINI as a two-door, two-seater sports car, which caused the quotes to be higher.

My car is on the AIDA also!!!

I'm with State Farm in NC. We are both over 50 with no kids left at home and good driving records. Our MCS costs the same as my wife's 98 Metro: just under $600 per year.

Just picked up Chili Red S and insured it today. $529 a year, did go for the $1000 deductible, saved about $200 per year.

Granted this info came from my MINI salesperson, but apparently many insurance companies are insuring the MINI at rates comparable to the Civic hatchback, for example. On paper at least, they're very similar cars - similar size, three door, four passenger, four cylinders, similar horsepower. On top of that, the MINI has more airbags, more electronic stability control, etc., but at a slightly higher MSRP.

I tried calling a few insurance agencies back in July when I put my deposit down, and I actually couldn't find one that knew what a MINI was...

You might want to check out the Insweb website, which rates coverages and premiums across multiple insurance firms. I personally like it better than progressive, as it asks you more detailed questions to get a more accurate quote.

wow. i'm still getting quoted $1300-1800 a year -- gotta love LA. ARGH.

Perfectly clean record, no tickets/accidents or anything. It's the living in the city part that does it for me.

i'm still looking around, i take delivery in about a week!!

i cannot wait!!

Theres a new company thats coming to the states from Germany (Allianz Insurance) that quoted me 69$ per month. They only go by engine size. I live in Germany so thats what Im getting when my MCS is deliverred in 1 1/2 months. I was told they are going world wide with insurance. I suppose 69 a month is pricy, but 828 a year for full coverage on a new sports car is pretty damn good. My wifes 2002 CR-V is 75 per month. Good luck.

I'm with Farm Bureau in Eastern Tenneesee, just turned 50, no kids at home, full comp with 250 deductible on collision and paying 570/year. Thought this was excessive until I viewed other owners from other states.

I hear that...I'm in MA (over 35, no driving kids, a high "safe driver" discount, and the AAA discount) and pay $550/yr for a 10 year old Nissan (w/ full comp and a $500 ded) and $850/yr for a 01 Chrysler minivan (same with $500 ded). My insurance agent said yesterday when I went to register my MCS that she didn't know what insurance on the MINI would be since the ins co hadn't published their rates on MINIs yet. She suspected that it would be around the same as what I'm paying on the Nissan since the rates are generally based on purchase price...but then again, she noted that MINIs are rated in MA as "high theft" and it could be higher. We'll see.

FYI, in MA we don't have the advantage of really shopping around for auto insurance. All of the major insurers (e.g. Allstate, State Farm, etc.) refuse to sell in this state and the state sets all rates. It therefore makes no difference except from a customer service point of view WHO we buy insurance from....it all costs the same.

So, lucky you don't live here.

I had a guy explain to me years ago how they figure insurance rates. The primary factors are how often are they stolen and/or wrecked. My Honda Accord wagon is the highest for us to insure. Remember, I also have two turbo trucks! The Accord has all of 115 hp and the Syclone is now pushing 400!! LOL But, because the Accord is high on the theft and the accident lists, it is the highest to insure. For all three vehicles, I pay around $1200 a year. I have a ticket on my last insurance rate so we will be paying less after 1 October. I am also going to be turning 35 (UGH! no comments from the peanut gallery! ) so that will decrease our rate. I am going to wait until after my ticket comes off to see what the cost for the MINI will be. I am also going to take the Honda off full coverage to also reduce the cost.

I am keeping my eyes posted here to figure out what I should be quoted. Oh, my insurance company is Prudential.

My insurance went up 25% - not bad for trading in a 9 year old car.

Hey Gidget - I used to live in LA (valley) - moved away in 1991 - and still paying less on my Mini than I ever paid in LA on a Honda Accord. Always have had a clean record too. So in general I feel I can not complain about insurance.

Yikes! I didn't realize Pittsburgh was such a high insurance state!
I'm paying $746 for 6 months through Geico and they were about $200 cheaper than the lowest quote I got! eek! I have a perfect driving record (no accidents, tickets. etc.)

I'm in Dallas and with one ticket on my record I'm paying $950/year on my MCS. I may need to check and see that they don't have this thing listed as a 2 door sport coupe.

My 2003 MC is $380 per year. To further explain, I'm 52, a member of AARP, my insurance is thru Hartford, and I have two other cars and my house insured. That accounts for the low low rates.
