I need a throw-out bearing...

I need to replace my throw-out bearing. Apparently, there are only 21 located in the nation, according to 3 different Mini dealerships. Does anyone know an aftermarket supplier I can get one from, fairly quickly? I want to have my Dad replace it this weekend.

Thanks!

How many miles are on your clutch? Well, it doesn't really matter. If you are going through the trouble of dropping the transmission, you should replace the whole clutch assembly. They'll give you a throw-out bearing with a new clutch. Stay away from SPEC clutches.

Try www.clutchmasters.com or www.waymotorworks.com for quality clutch replacement parts. They may be able to hook you up with overnight delivery of parts if available.

What has brought you to the conclusion that you need a throwout bearing?

I have a 2003 with 85K miles on it. There's no warranty to speak of (unfortunately.)

On Friday, it started making a sound/vibration when I pushed the clutch in and stopped when I released the clutch. I told my dad, (aka my mechanic) and he diagnosed it as the throw out bearing. He seemed to think that I caught the sound early enough that I wouldn't need to drop $$ on a totally new clutch.

I'll try the companies you guys suggested . . .

In my opinion, a noisy throw out bearing is not likely to fail any time soon, at least not to the point where the car is undriveable. I can not imagine going to the time and trouble of replacing only the throw out bearing, without also replacing the clutch and possibly the rear main seal too.

This may be a silly question . . . What's the rear main seal?

Obviously, it's a good thing I'm not the one doin' the work, but I am the one ordering the parts. It helps to grasp what the part is for. (Though sometimes, I just say the name and hope the guy on the other end knows what the hell I'm talking about!)

You can see one here; it won't need replacing unless it is leaking. If the clutch plate is ok, there will be no need to replace that either, but if you don't have a back up, well you're without the MINI until you get one.
