Underdrive pulley and supercharger pulley

I have an 04 MCS and am looking for ways to increase the horsepower. Can one have a 2% underdrive pulley and a 19% supercharger pulley without them "cancelling" eachother out? any insight will be appreciated.

I think you meant a 2% overdrive crank pulley. That and a 19% supercharger pulley would be overkill. It would also really wear on the supercharger because you would be spinning it so fast. 99% of customers do just a 15% or 17% pulley.

I've got a 16%er on my 03 with a 2% crank pulley and it makes plenty of power without killing the supercharger like miniguru said. Very drivable around town and on the twisties

but seriously, I've got a 17% on my 04...that suits just fine....and gives room to grow with other parts that compliment

I have a 15% SC PULLEY, AND THE 2% oversized crank pulley. It equals out to roughly a 17% sc pulley like M!N! Me has on his car, I just wanted a lighter crank pulley. At the time, all I could get was a 2% crank pulley, so that's what I got. As you can see the possibilities are endless, and it's up to you for your choice. Just don't overdo it. If your car is a daily driver, I'd stick with a 15% and a 2% crank pulley, or just a 17% sc pulley. My personal opinion is that 19% pulleys are more for people who don't drive their cars daily and really race them or compete.

I have a 17% with a 2% and it works just fine. I haven't had a problem at least not yet.

I think what Way was saying is that longer term you will kill the SC.
I would tend to trust Way's view as he is one of the most respected mechanics and drivers of MINIs.

If you were to da an underdrive of %2 on the crank and a underdrive of 19 on the SC you would probably end up somewhere around 17 (I suppose).

That said there isnt much of a reason to do an underdrive crank on the cars IMO, all you have on the serpentine belt are the SC (need that), the alternator (underdriving that could cause problems), and the AC (which doesnt sap power unless its on).

The only problems I have had with my 2% overdrive pulley, is that the clock runs faster. By the way Some Guy, have you ever held a stock crank pulley, then held a lightened crank pulley? If you did, you'd probably change your mind. These cars aren't rev happy as some of there Japanese counterparts are. It takes a little effort to turn the engine. With that said, anything that can help reduce drag on the engine is a welcome for me.

I think we are talking about two different things here.

An over drive or under drive pulley doent HAVE to be lightweight design to work. You could theoretically make an underdrive crank pulley the same weight as the larger OEM pulley and only get the benefit of having the engine take less effort to turn the acessories. That said they all are a lightweight design, and that is because the OEM is heavy as hell like you were saying.

Actually that's a good question and I am really curious about it.

BTW, good catch on the Initial D reference in the other thread Fatherdeth.

The actual time clock on the speedometer. It usually takes a while, but after a few weeks of driving, I have to reset the time and knock off almost 30 minutes. I just assumed that the oversized crank pulley was the culprit. It never did this until I had the pulley installed. I never did the alternator pulley because I heard it was a pain in the butt to change, and time is something I just don't have any more. It is weird though.

As far as Initial D, I'm not a big fan of Japanese cars, but boy do I love that show. An anime series about streetracing......it doesn't get any better than that.

That seems really, really weird. I cant imagine the clock getting its time based off the engine in any way. It's baffling that it happened at the same time you installed the pulley.

It's possible the clock is fast, but don't know if it really has anythig to do with the pullies. In 05 we had clock problems with alot of the convertibles, they had some reflash updates and some got new clusters to fix it. I'd see if the dealer can do an update and fix it.

Thanks Way, I plan on visiting the dealer when I return home. I will ask them to take a look at it. I kind of find it hard to believe that the pulley would cause this, but it was my only thought at the time.

Just don't say anything about the pulley. Since it's not a normal problem a lazy tech may use it as an out to avoid a long diagnosis.
