R50/53 SOMEBODY HELP!
SOMEBODY HELP!
I have had a S for a little over 3 years and have never had any problems with it. I have 15% pulley, header, exhaust, intake, WAIC, and the GIAC tune from helix. Just recently started acting funny. had all the mods for quite some time now. If I rev the thing over 6000 rpm WOT it pings a little and then throws the light associated with DSC....the little "don't turn too fast light". I installed everything and consider myself pretty good with knowledge of vehicles. Last time on the dyno I saw no signs of a lean condition. I find it strange that it doesn't go ointo limp mode or throw a code. Anyone else encounter this? sorry so long...
The check engine light may not come on, but it could still have a code. Take the car to an autoparts store and have them read it with a scan tool. Just a guess here, but something might not be right with your spark plugs or ignition coil.
Ping at high RPM and WOT?
This is a sign of fuel starvation, but like Gnatster says, bad plugs can do that as well. Change the plugs and do it again. Check codes (anyone who mods a modern car NEEDS to have a code scanner that gets the freeze frame data as well) to see what the engine thinks is up.
If the plugs don't fix things, then there's two classes of problems you could be running into. The DSC thing is wierd. That tends to come on with problems in wheel speed sensors..... Also throttle body control can do that as well... But the TB stuff throws engine codes... Does this repeat? (Same cause with same effect?) and does it clear with an engine restart?
If you want to follow up on the lean condition, this could be a fuel filter or dirty injectors.
Anyway, sorry I don't have a "it's this" direct answer, but the DSC light and pinging at high load and RPM is a set of issues I haven't really seen as linked before.
FWIW, the factory diagnostics can probe much more than an OBD-II scanner, and can query things like ABS/DSC systems and the like. If the OBD scanner doesn't lead anywhere, it might be worth getting it scanned at a dealer or a higher end BMW/Mini service place that has access to those tools.

doubt it but maybe your loosing traction at 6k i loose it at about 5k at WOT and if dont turn off dcs ill will blink telling me i have tooo much poowwer. but seiously it does come on, i dont hear any pinging though
Same Problem(without the pinging)
I recently had an Alta 17% pulley installed and an Alta intake and when down shifting from 6-4 and redlining while go back to 6th, the DSC light will come on, but once i turn the car off and then back on it will go away. I am not losing traction at all, but the light still comes on.
nah i have a code reader and nothing ever comes up. If that doesn't solve it I guess I will get the dealer to scan it. The light will stay on until I restart the car. it isn't a traction issue either? I think I am gonna change the plugs and maybe run some injector cleaner through it. It is the same or even if I go WOT at low rpm in a high gear it will do it too. I was thinking fuel too....I have the WAIC and right now I never see intake temps higher than about 60F since it is so cold outside. I let ya'll know what comes up

Try what you said. If that doesn't work, take your O2 sensor off and clean it. Don't use any harsh chemicals, just wipe it real good with a rag. Usually O2 sensors kick codes if they are bad or going bad, but it's possible, just possible it's slightly carbonized to the point that you are running a little leaner. Anyway, good luck and keep us posted.
