R50/53 Porting your own head: how I'm doing it...
just want you to know i had a slight fear that this was going to be a thread like the vw one that i saw, where a kid said he decided to port his head and took the filter off the intake and suck sand though it thinking it would just blow straight out the exhaust

Do some research before you polish those to a mirror shine, I remember reading that you want a very slight roughness to the finish. Something about laminar flow and collecting droplets of fuel or something. I'll look for some more info too.............

On the intake side you want to leave the marks. On the exhaust you can polish it to a mirror. One my GTO I had the exhaust ports, valve faces and chamber thermal coated by Precision Motorsports.

A final note on this thread and project as someone had asked how it was coming...
First I have finished up my exhaust porting job which my MINI tech. friend said looked great to him. I didn't take the porting job all the way out to the edges of the new RMW's gasket but they are definitely larger than either a standard S head or my old JCW head. I went with a satin finish on this and throughly washed, rinsed and dried my head before installation.
Then I installed new 380 injectors, a RMW cam and header; now I'm going to Dallas next weekend for the tune. I'm all signed up. The car is running really strong however it will cut out when floored at low rpms (just a little catch really) as it's getting too much fuel from those larger injectors for the old ECU programming to handle; at least thats what I "think" is happening. From about 3200/3500 rpm, it will almost run out from under you but that may be the case with any S as I've only driven my MINI.
I can get 6.68 in 0 to 60 acceleration even with a poor start as that pesky "bogged down" low rpm problem shows up when I come off the line. I'll update my thread once more on this once I've had the tune. I really didn't know anyone was following my progress...
