R50/53 Passenger side window issue
Passenger side window issue
Anybody out there had this one happen?
My 03 Coop S passenger side door window just stopped working. It's not working at the switch, it doesn't work with either the key in the door lock or with the remote function to open all the windows and roof. It was working so did I accidentally reprogram something or did my switch just die?
If I did reprogram something how do I figure out what is programmed to what in my car?
Thanks

You will see from reading around here window motors on first gen MINIs die on a regular basis. I have had both my window motors replaced and I have an '04. You can try banging on the inside of the door for short term fix but you are likely looking at a motor replacement.

Can't help you with cost. I had my pass. side window motor replaced under warranty years ago. I've also had the switches replaced twice under warranty. The window quit working again about a month ago, even though I could hear it cllicking in the door when I hit the switch. Then one day, it started working again. It's been working fine since, except for the other day when it wouldn't open. Worked fine the next day, though.
Dale:
Did you install it yourself? Is so, was it difficult to get the door panel off and replace it?
Thanks

The door panel was not too difficult, you are going to feel like you are going to break the panel when trying to pry it off, but after a lot of force, it should pop right off.
The one thing that I am having problems with, and have to investigate, is the fact that the "nuts or washers" that they use to hold the window on are shaped like cogs, and need a special tool to get them off. I have to see if it is purchasable from the dealership.
Does anybody else have any tips for getting these nuts/washers off?

Cost price for you.
I had both of mine replaced on my 03 within 1 year of each other. My mechanic repaired them for $200 each. The part is only $125. Dealer will do it for about $400. Mini dealer charges 3 hours labor to do it, it took my mechanic 30 mins. BTW - my mechanic is a Mini Mechanic at a dealer.
Good luck. Find a good outside Mini Mechanic. Forget the dealer. RIP OFF!!!!!

same thing with mine. 04 56K miles. out of warranty. my passenger side window goes down smooth and when it goes up, it's like rusty and rigid. one time it made the most horrible squeaking noise when going up. but the auto up and down function still works...
okay, I just got finished replacing the window regulator. Let me ask, does your window make a "click click" noise when you try to put it up or down? I figured that the motor might be making that noise so i just purchased the regulator.
You are going to have to take the window out, it is easiest to follow the directions in the Bentley manual. If you window is stuck in the up position, you are going to have a pretty tough time getting the window out of the door. The manual does mention that you will need a special tool to get the "washers" that hold the windows to the regulator, because they look like toothed cogs, however, they can take a 5mm allen wrench in the center.
you will then have to remove all of the screws and trim that the manual tells you to, and then you will need unplug all harnesses, unscrew the speakers and inner door handle, bend and push and pull to be able to pull the washers off (they get held up on the inner door supports) and then you can lift the window out of the door. I found it helpful to also remove the side mirror.
when you remove the regulator, it will get stuck up on some white clips towards the top of the inside of the door, so those will have to be broken to get them out (don't worry, the new regulator assy. comes with new ones.) when it is completely out, you will have to remove the motor, I suggest plugging the motor back in to the harness and testing to make sure it actually works, so you will know if you need a new motor before installing everything else. The motor is held onto the regulator assembly by four screws, a few of them are behind the black track, so, you will have to look at where there are two white pulleys, and you will see a silver screw holding a plastic "tongue" or clip-like apparatus that you have to unscrew and lift to free the motor and a portion of the housing to the regulator cable pulley. once you get the four screws out that hold the motor on, you can separate them, the pulley with the cables wound around it will probably spring apart, that is okay, because they will be trash. re-screw the motor to the new assembly and then start putting it all back the way you took it apart. it sounds a little more involved than it actualy is, however, it does become a slight pain if you window is stuck in the up position.
The regulator assembly only cost me about 115.00 from my dealership, and I didn't have to buy a new motor. if you take it to the dealer, they may make you purchase a new motor.

Just to clarify...
Thanks everyone for this great information. The NAM community is always full of knowledge!
My passenger side window on my '02 MC stopped working 2 days ago. I am hearing a clicking sound when I flip the window switch. Should I be looking to replace the regulator or motor or both? I am novice when it comes to this but I am looking to attempt this repair by myself.
Thanks!

I assume you have checked the fuses right? Do that before you do anything else. if that doesn't work, try doing the regulator first. I do believe that the clicking means that the cables have bound, and the motor is meeting resistance when it is trying to spin. You can also attempt to re-set the cables in the pulley, however, the pulley and the cables usually come flying apart as soon as you remove the motor, rendering the regulator pretty useless.
Good luck, and post back if you need any help or have any questions!
