Hey!

My sunroof rattles on my Mini sometimes! Has anyone else had this problem? I usually have to open and close it several times after it begins to hum, buzz, rattle, or whatever you want to call it.

Motor ON!

I also have a rattle in my sunroof (front, right side). Looking at the wind deflector there is a "worn" spot on it so I'm assuming that's where it's banging against. I inted to bring it to the dealers attention when I bring it in for it's first service in a few weeks.

Hmmm...maybe it's only on dark silver models?

Well, chaulk me up as another Dark Silver sunroof rattle owner. Dang, had hoped someone knew how to fix. Guess I'll try some stick on felt or something.

Nope, mine is electric blue and I have the rattle/buzz. Right front. I assumed that it was the wind deflector too. After only 300 miles, I don't have the wear spot...yet.

Hey MINI Customer Service lurkers...do you think this is a service bulletin? Or will we have to try to "replicate the problem" for our dealers?

These little rattle things really drive me nuts (in any car, not just a MINI). Almost more so than truly serious mechanical problems. With a big problem, at least you know that it'll get fixed. It's the little details that one is expected to "live with" that never seem to get addressed.

I have the same rattle. I have an appt to get it fixed next Wed., along with the boot latch rattle, a mysterious hazard light that's coming on related to the ASC and a 5K mile oil change. So I'll post the solution when I get my car back!

So how common is this problem? Does it occur when it is open or closed? Well, My car's going to be built in two days, so i guess it's to late to think about it.

Is this causing anyone to regret getting the sunroof?

Allay my fears, o brethren (and sistren, too)!

Although annoying I find that if I raise the roof it takes away the rattle. Since the cold weather hasn't hit yet I don't mind driving to work with a little fresh air. I bring my S in for it's first service this Saturday - hopfully they'll take care of the problem.

It seems that there's a lot to fear in this world nowadays...and all things considered the potential of sunroof rattle is pretty far down the list

Heck, I'm sure that sooner or later this rattle (if the dealer can't just "fix" it) will fade into the background of other age-related car noises. It's pretty minor and goes away if I open and close the roof a few times. Kind of annoying on a brand new car, but not a terminal problem.

I did not order the Dual pane Sunroof, not out of concerns about premature rattles or water leaks, but rather because I was not very thrilled about the "transparent" sunshade instead of a solid one like the ones found in most other cars.

Lately I keep reading about complaints about rattling sunroofs not only in the MINI but other new cars such as Acuras, Hondas, Toyotas, etc.

I have previously owned 2 Japanese vehicles with sunroofs and never had any problems with them right out of the box.

I suspect that the MINI's sunroof rattles are the by product of insufficient QC at the assembly line or at the third party manufacturer of these units. I guess that these issues can be solved by readjusting the sunroof assembly points or making some rectifications to the tracks/rain channels to ensure proper closing fit.

From an aesthetic point of view, I prefer the MINI's roof without a sunroof, but that dual pane sunroof is really cool and a very rare find on a sub $20K new car.

I am sure MINI will soon issue a TSB to cure these minor but annoying rattles.

Some rattling and creaking here on my dark silver S with white roof. Of course, it didn't start until I started driving 90+mph with the roof fully open. I do get scared sometimes that the roof will fly off at high speed with all the wind resistance (I think it actually did happen to someone's volkswagen on vwvortex).

I hope I'm not jinxing anything, but Ringo's got 500 miles on him after 3 weeks and no rattles of any kind. Of course, I just tested lowering the spare tonight and I can't believe that it's held to the body with only one small bolt. Maybe I have caused a rattle there!
Only serious problems are the bug stains on the hood and the finger prints on the windows.

Motor On.

Dark silver here, and I have a slight rattle, though only when the bass is loud... I thought for a while it was just the speakers, but after a while I traced it to my sunroof. Oh, well, I can deal, I'd much rather have a sunroof than not.

Spoke too soon... After 2700 miles, the rattle has begun. Oh well...
Anyone have any luck getting it fixed, or are you all just living with
the rattle?

Mine developed at 800 miles, I took some velcro (soft side) and placed it on the wind deflector, if you look at where the sunroof rests on the deflector, you will see some small marks, just apply the velcro to that area and no more rattle/buzz.

I took MINI (Yup DS/W MCS) to the dealer when my rattle became unbearable. He placed soft sided velcro on the 2 wind flaps close to the center and close (1/2"??) down from the leading edge when closed. That was about 1000 miles ago. Good fix for awhile however, the rattle has since re-appeared as the velcro has worn down where the sunroof rests against it. I am going back in to have it fixed again next week. I have to believe there is an adjustment point somewhere in the roof assembly to account for this play (slop?) in the assembly. Any others with comments?

I took my MCS in for it's 10k and asked them to fix the rattle. They worked on the moulding, around the sunroof, and "fixed" the rattle. After driving it for a couple hundred miles the rattle was back AND as an extra treat when ever I open the sunroof it 'BANGS' like the moulding is now too tight and it's binding on the glass tracks. Sounds like the thing is going to break each time I open it. I'll be taking it back to the dealer as soon as I get a chance but since they're 150 miles away I have to live with it for a while.
I think I'd rather just go the velcro route.
