R50/53 Sunroof Rattle?
I can verify that the velcro fix works, but just for a while until it wears down. I also get a groaning from my sunroof as it opens to the fullest extent, so I'm reluctant to have my dealer mess with the molding less I get the banging DrkSlvrS describes.
But one other thing to try is felt. My service dept said that they were experimenting with that...and I think that maybe good felt wouldn't smush down as quickly as the fuzzy side of velcro. I'll try that this weekend and let you know what happened.

>>Mine developed at 800 miles, I took some velcro (soft side) and placed it on the wind deflector, if you look at where the sunroof rests on the deflector, you will see some small marks, just apply the velcro to that area and no more rattle/buzz.

Thx for the suggestion. I have a small rattle that has come with the colder weather. It goes away when I open the sunroof slightly (either front or back of sunroof). I traced the noise to the molding around the sunroof, and then to where the sunroof rests on the deflector. I was wondering what to put in to tighten it up. I think the soft velcro is a great idea. I get a package of it and plan to replace it every few months as the velcro wears down. I'll ask the dealer if there is a more permanent fix that doesn't involve over tightening the molding.
Thx for the idea!

>>Too bad they couldn't put the same felt that is on the back of the seat belt lock onto the air deflectors.
Another good place for the felt is where the shelf behind the back seat (that covers the luggage compartment under the boot) rests on it's supports. That seems to bounce when I go over bumps and makes a klunking sound. I had the same sound with an old vw rabbit years ago, and remember using some felt to silence it.
Has anyone else had this noise from the luggage cover behind the back seat. Did you come up with a better fix?

I have a chili Red Mini Cooper and the sun roof just started to rattle this past week. I have 3150 miles on her. If I open it the rattle stops. Very annoying. I hope they will be able to fix. I had a rattle in my door and the dealer said that I will have to live with it. Great solution. Love the car, but rattles really erk me. Anyone else with a door rattle? Any solutions?
My rattle showed up when the weather here (Chicagoland) got cold. And yep, it's coming from the deflectors (plastic flaps) where they touch the sunroof when it is shut. And yes, you can make it quiet with a McGuyver-like tape job on the flap where it contacts the sunroof. Since plastic gets stiffer as it gets colder, I'm sure that's why we are all starting to develop the rattle. I'm sure those rock-roller run flat tires don't help much, either.
I love the cars' styling, handling and overall performance, but it really is starting to look like its built like a piece of crap. I've never had a car with so much little **** wrong with it. The inventory:
1. Front grill came loose.
2. The "S" emblem in the side marker light assembly nearly fell off while I was washing the car.
3. The felt seal surrounding the sunroof came loose and fell down into the channel.
4. The rear hatch rattles when I hit a stiff bump (to the MINI, that's nearly every bump). Dealer "fixed", but it still rattles.
5. The gear shift **** is loose.
6. The parking brake handle is loose.
7. Can't close the rear hatch after opening with the remote.
8. Can smell exhaust gasses when decelerating with either the sunroof partly open or the dash vents open.
9. Engine surges at about 3200 rpm at moderate throttle. Most pronounced in second gear. Dealer says I have the latest software, to try again in a few months, that maybe by then more owners will have complained.
10. The passenger side windshield washer hose was getting pinched between hood and cowl when I closed the hood. I pulled their tape job off and retaped, fine now.
11. Brake dust is nasty! Pads must be made out of chalk. I've never had a car that dirtied the wheels like this.
12. Just noticed last week that they missed the bottom trailing edge of the rear spoiler when it as painted.
13. And, of course, the sunroof rattles.
Mine is an MCS, July 23 delivery, so it's not an early build car. Starting to worry that my car is no exception, the word will get out that the car is poorly constructed and the resale value will plummet.
Man, I really want to keep this car, but I don't want a lemon. I had one once, and it sucked. What to do?

the rattle comes from the plastic housing on the interior of the sunroof that houses the opener....mine rattled like crazy unless the sunroof was open or I pressed my hand up to put pressure on it....2 day fix as they had to take it apart and re super glue it or whatever they did...way too much plastic on the interior unfortunately....
I love the cars' styling, handling and overall performance, but it really is starting to look like its built like a piece of crap. I've never had a car with so much little **** wrong with it.
Just read your post and thought I was the only one with mini problems, thus the name miniblues, as many posters here stating they have never had a problem...but couldn't imagine that since everytime I took it back to the same service tech guy, he would laugh and say yeah, already seen that...my inventory:
1. Severe rear hatch rattle, 4 days to fix, but rattle seems to be fixed
2. Supercharger out...10 days, but new one seems ok now
3. Seat frames on Driver's seat broke, could not adjust seat backs, only position was all the way back...took 3 weeks to get new frames in which was a bit uncomfy to drive, so I drove my other car...take the plastic back off the seat with your hands, no tools required and look inside, not very comforting site...they replaced the seat frames on the passenger side at the same time as they said it was an issue on some vin # minis whatever the hell that means
4. Sunroof rattle...2 day fix
5. Defective runflat....that can happen, but took 10 days to get another runflat to match the other 3...
6. Air compressor failed, almost 10 days for the new one to arrive
7. Still experiencing the stall on stop or start with the ac on even after the so called software fix but at least the ac is now working...
The problems seem to be escalating as I add miles, now about 7K, not feeling very good about all the plastic in the car as I think more rattles are inevitable. Every time I take it to the shop, I threaten to trade it, then when I pick it up realize how much fun it is to drive, then something else breaks and the cycle starts all over again with the thoughts of get rid of this piece of junk, then I drive it again..lol!
Anyway I've already resigned myself to the fact the resale is already falling on minis by looking in the paper and the trade in they offered me on a 3 series BMW was a joke..so oh well, I'll try it again when I pick it up as it is now in the shop again for a new bumper after someone tapped me in the parking lot, now going on 3 weeks to get a replacement bumper from mini.....my question did BMW have to shave costs on the interior and build in order to get the design and suspension right and wouldn't it have been more prudent to have charged a few thousand more for less plastic and better build? I realize they are trying to hit a certain market demographic for price, but with the new baby bimmer coming out next year at about the same price as the mcs it will be interesting to compare the build quality of the two..can't imagine BMW risking the BMW badge name on the build quality of the baby bimmer....
Go pick up a VW Jetta/Golf/Beetle and you will get TONS of rattles and anoying noises. I had to have my front suspension changed because everytime I went over any bump, it made the craziest sound. Then I had to have it switched again after the spring wore a groove in the perch. There is NO WAY the Mini's can be worse! (at least I'm hoping)

I'm hoping the car I own is a good car, one that in the long run I will be glad I purchased. With all due respect, comparing the MCS to another manufacturer's sub-standard quality does little to help me accept the faults that keep popping up in my car. I see this argument over and over again..."The MINI isn't as bad as a [insert crappy make/model here]."
I can see why the things that are going wrong with my car are happening. The problems are primarily with component design, not craftsmanship (although there are some minor issues on that front, too). That means sooner or later most owners will experience the same problems. Inevitably word will spread.
It will be a shame if a concept as good as the MINI falls prey to poor reliability. Especially since I bought one.

I'm afraid you are wrong about that, Rocketboy. I think that we will all develop the sunroof and rear hatch rattles, loose trim, etc. because these are design problems. And I think most people who frequently contribute to this site love these cars (as I do) so have a tendency to minimize the flaws we are discovering, but they are there. Go back a few posts in this thread and take a gander at the 13 things that aren't right about my car. Look at the 7 posted by miniblues. Most of these things are minor, but they are happening, and happening frequently. I've had my car for 3 months now. There is no way another MINI owner can look me in the eye and tell me that they are confident that their car is built to last, that they are sure it will give them years of trouble-free service, because these little things that are going wrong are causing doubt in all of us. Some don't care, and that's alright. But many of us who bought the car expected more from the highly touted German automaker, and they didn't mind leading us to believe that this is a solidly built car (not to be confused with rigid). I've said it before in another post: Minimizing the MINI's faults here on this website is doing a disservice to all MINI owners. We sould be holding the automaker's feet to the fire.

I'm not trying to be combative here. I'm hoping that as enthusiasts we all realize that collectively we may be able to influence MINI and BMW to heed our complaints and take corrective action. I don't know how many registered users this site has, but its gotta be a bunch. So, what's it gonna be? Do we tell MINI (and you know they are tuning in to this and other MINI sites to take our temperatures) that we'll ignore the faults because the cars look neat and handle great, or do we tell them to get this crap fixed, and pronto?

Ted,
Very passionate you are...and have made many valid points.
The Mini is a fun car and most here do indeed "overlook" many of the minor flaws and additionally some of the major flaws.
I've touted the "cold start issue" since almost day one and it took (3) months to addresss and correct this issue. This was a MAJOR flaw!!!!!!. I still can not believe that they shipped a car that would not start ...every time. I know I've ranted about this before....but I will NEVER accept this.
On to the minor flaws......
The list grows with each day, and some poor souls are more affected than others unfortunately. I have personally had no " real" problems except the "occasional" sun roof buzz.....that comes & goes....without any rime or reason......
After reading many of these posts I feel a combination of ..."luck of the draw" and "fear" that my time for problems.....just might be right around the corner, as I'm in the car since July 2002 & have 7000+ miles on it.
Here's my point !!!!
The car is fun...yes..... we can all agree on that I'm sure. The fastest go-kart I've ever owned
BUT
The car is not built to the standards of a BMW or of a car that is priced at the $24K range, as can be seen from the many issues that have arisen... from the many....many....many....posts.
I totally agree that we should stand united ....hold the manufactures responsible for these blatant design defects...... and have all issues addressed within reasonable time frames.
Waiting 3 months to have my car start..... the 1st time,,,, as they are built to do... ... is NOT reasonable...
Peace,
Dennis

I won't get my car 'til probably late-nov/early dec. I am a bit nervous to have to deal with some of these issues because one thing I hate is service depts. @ dealerships. But to the point, there are a lot of people here that are getting there cars in Nov., and time will tell if we all have some of the same issues or entirely new ones to contend with. It will probably be a couple of months before the "Can't Wait for November Club" has broken in their cars and the whistles, rattles, and buzzes start to appear. Hopefully the folks at BMW/MINI are paying attention and seriously tending to these issues. And hopefully they will understand that us motorers all want one thing, and that is we all want the MINI to succeed and not become someone's second choice behind a much more generic car because of reliability.
Dennis, I agree with you 100%... what follows is my e-mail correspondence via a message I sent MINIUSA through the owners lounge... remember with outlook, the first message you read is actually the last one sent so scroll down for my original message and then page up for the diatribe...
>Quite frankly, Jen, this reply is a bit cold and smacks of a slightly "superior" attitude. I am troubled to be part of a group that is furthering MINI's design and development without compensation. These challenges with the sunroof design should have been resolved in the vehicle development phase of the product design. It certainly took long enough for this product to reach production.
We early MINI owners are your best advertising avenue and as such, we deserve a far better answer/resolution. You can see from the link I provided in my first message, several prospective buyers are visiting the MCO site to get some first hand reports on real world involvement with the cars. Too many negatives equal disaffected potential buyers and a negative perception of the MINI overall in the market place.
Surely, you can give me as well as my fellow "motoring" enthusiasts a better answer than the stock answer provided below. Hundreds, if not thousands, of MINI owners await a better and more complete response.
Sincerely,
Garth Erdrich

Mine developed the sunroof rattle when I crossed the Utah/Nevada line. Wonder if someone was betting against me. Yes, this seems to be common problem and it drives me nuts. Only happens when the sunroof is closed. Doesn't matter if the wind deflector is open or shut.
Pressure on the edge of the moulding stops it. I may try the velcro fix until I take it in for service (150 miles away) after 7000 more miles. Long time to tollerate this kind of nuissance.

+1 ...on the passenger side, only when cold (ambient temp at freezing or below) and only noticeable on rough road surfaces. Not a big deal. I can live with it, unless it deteriorates with time.
Another Dark Silver rattling roof here as well....
Wow. Old thread.
I fixed my rattle by using soft-sided adhesive velcro. Simply stick some against the wind deflector on the rear facing side. It's been quite cold (6°) since I did this, but the rattle hasn't come back.
('02 DS, for what its worth)
