R50/53 Almost sad to even think this, pedals.
Almost sad to even think this, pedals.
I am going nuts, my feet just don't fit on the pedals. I have to sit so far back to let my feet clear the tops of the pedals (metal bars they ride on) that I sometimes can't or don't push the clutch in far enough ending in grinding shifts. I have size 11.5-12 feet in 3E width, Not huge by some standards but big feet. The brake is a nightmare, I find my foot resting completely on the bar above it in quick brake actions and when driving normally I have to just slide it over half the pedal from the throttle to not hit the car.
what I am thinking, and don't laugh! is to put some sort of block, I would probably have something machined, to make the pedal pads (I know they come off) so the underlying metal pad thicker, maybe 1/2-1 inch. I think that would allow me to put my foot on them and not depress the clutch whilst pushing on the brake (my foot sits on both bars)
any thoughts? stupidest thing you ever heard? possible good idea? You are also the jolly green giant and this happens to you?
Any comments suggestions welcome, I am afraid I might actually have an accident because of this.

I wear a size 12 myself and had the same issues at first but got used to it and I wear my boots all the time that make my feet even bigger. Not sure what would do the trick to mod it out for you....maybe try different shoes for a while when your driving?
I'm not sure what your problem is. I wear a size 13 and have no problem. I have driven in steel toed working boots, as well, no issues.
If it is a height issue, I'm almost positive your pedals were mounted incorrectly. If it is a width issue, maybe try driving barefooted and see if you get the same problems?

I wear size 13 and have wide feet, im 6'4" and i take full advantage of it... I dont have to "heel toe" but rather just have my left half of my foot on the brake and my toe/right side on the gas and revmatching is waaaayyy easy...lol
lucky!

...Trackmasters and BMW club instructors at driving schools at Watkin's Glen told me this can be VERY DANGEROUS!!! What happens when you stomp on the brakes and hit the gas also? This is obviously a much bigger problem on the track, but it happens on the streets also.

I've NEVER had that problem. lol

And yes, obviously coordination plays a major part in any exercise using both of your feet and both hands simultaneously...
I did a pretty thorough inspection today and maybe as I have driven a much larger car I am used to having to put my foot way over on the brake, I noticed that when I really paid attention to what my feet were doing that my foot could completely cover the brake pedal and not be near the bar above it as it is offset.
I guess I have to get used to it, I have to be honest, I don't feel as comfortable driving the car as I thought I would. I think I am so used to a land yacht that I have to relearn to drive a fun car. I am almost scared to break something if you can understand that.
Cheers for the replies. Peter

My feet are size 12, C narrow I think - 4" wide at the ball. I have no problems with any shoe and the pedals, but I would recommend a good pair of Piloti driving shoes. These shoes dramatically improved my control and I can't drive with anything else now.

I did some experimenting today. When I placed my heel directly under the pedal then the top of my foot went far above the pedal onto the bar. This is pretty uncomfortable, however. Maybe try bending your knees a little more while you are driving and place heels further away from the pedals. Shift with entire leg, not just foot.
Tell me if this helps or if I'm WAY off. Wouldn't be the first time.
Oh god, its gotten insane, I am sorry but something is drastically wrong, I am very much considering taking off the rubber covers with metal pads and putting on aluminum spacers that I get made up, My foot sits on top of the thick bar above the pedal. I was thinking it was just when I went to far to the left (remember my car is RHD as its UK spec) and was hitting the bar holding the clutch pedal but it is on the brake support bar as well.
the wing, you got it! my problem is that I am 5 foot 11, Size 12 (or 11.5 depending) shoe and also 3E width, I have tried sneakers, shoes of several types and barefoot today, I have to do something, I can't enjoy the car. I actually sold an isuzu rodeo for the exact same reason, I was not even hitting the pedal pads on that truck at all. I am not freakish but my legs are quite short for my height, thus I can't move back far enough to give my foot the position that would work. I should have the wife take a photo with my feet in the normal position.
Sheesh, I am a freak!

I have very wide size 13s (4E+). It took me a while to get used to the pedal placement, but once I did, I was fine. Not having driven a RHD car, I cant tell you what the differences are in the geometry of the pedals (I am sure things are a bit different).
I replaced my pedals a while back. This setup from Ultimate Pedals allows me to move my brake a bit closer to the gas to make heel-toe shifting easier on the trak, but then move it back to a slightly-farther-left-than-stock location for safer daily driving. The gas and dead pedals are made for the MINI. The gas/clutch were designed for a Ferrari 'Mod I' (whatever that means), but I liked the shape and the horizontal screw positioning so I can adjust the brake and clutch locations if I want.
I'd bet you could fit some spacers under 'em to lift the pedal height a bit and give you more clearance from the bar.

I have driven both RHD and LHD, the pedals are in the same places. Granted I haven't driven a RHD MINI but the Ford Mondao that I drove, the pedals were very close to what we have in our MINI's.
pmustang, I think that you will have to change your foot positions when driving. If you are hitting the bar that hangs vertically from under the dash your foot is too close the pedal. I have 9.5 shoes and I can do what you discribe. Try lifting you foot off the floor and pressing more with your toes instead of ball of your foot, like you'er pointing with your toes. Just a thought.

Thank you all for comments and suggestions given, Unfortunately I am wishing I did not buy this car, the ride Stinks (doing my back in) and got my first cracked windscreen today.

Here are the options for the MINI pedals at Ultimate Pedals:

I believe that these are the brake/clutch pedals that I got that were manufacturerd for a Ferrari 308 Mod 1. I got 'em because they had lots of holes that were arranged horizontally, so I could have many different possible settings. They also have a bit of an arch in them, which might help you with clearance on the bar: http://www.ultimatepedals.com/catalo...oducts_id=2315
There are lots of finish options, but I've found that I like the shiny surface w/ the slip-resistant grooves very much. I would recommend that you do NOT get the rubber inserts for the holes. I've heard that they pop out and can roll around under your feet under hard braking... not good. I thought that the hard metal petals would cause my feet to slip on 'em when they were wet, but they were much grippier than the stock pedals once you got used to not having the rubber strips on the stock pedals (that I slipped off of frequently when it was raining).
I know that these pedals work on my '06 MCS. I don't know how they would fit on a '07+ MC/MCS.
Really... If you wanted a cheap approach, you could just get the brake and clutch pedals... those are really the ones bugging you. It might not be the most aesthetically pleasing solution, but it would work.
