Transmission Oil Cooling

Hi NAMers, I would like to know if there is any modification to enhance the transmission oil cooling cycle. Is there any radiator or some other mod that can do the job? I've got an automatic and live in very high temp place.

I'm not sure where the drain plugs are on an automatic, but you could route lines from the drain and fill plug to some kind of oil cooler, you might need a pump of some kind. Space and mounting options are a big problem.

Yeah, it would be a great idea to custom make something but the space is a big issue especially when it comes to the front of our small tight lovely friends. I thought there is something already out there in the market with direct bolt ons.

Only an oil cooler is available right now. Most people don't need a transmission cooler, so no one has made a kit.

There are some engine oil coolers on the market. But no tranny oil coolers.

What oil temps are you seeing now?

If you aren't towing anything a tranny cooler is probably not a needed mod.

are you noticing sluggish performance in the higher temps now? just curious. i am here in socal. up near 100 the last few days and the car is a tad more sluggish and i'm not using the a/c. it's subtle but, noticeable. had the fluid changed about 3 months ago too.

Well, I started to notice that the gear selector is getting hot when you touch it to do the change. The idea of the greabox/gearbox oil high temps ppooped in my head. Summer is approaching and this is the first summer I spend with my car driven at that high performance and spirited driving.

I don't know what you have in your area for truck-rental services, but here in the States, places like Ryder and U-Haul have a LOT of experience installing automatic transmission oil coolers on a wide variety of cars. It's not a difficult install, either, because there are transmission coolers with built-in electric fans, so you can mount the cooler anywhere under your car that it will safely fit, and then you only have to run the cooler lines to/from the engine compartment.

While a transmission cooler may not be a necessity unless you're towing a trailer, it never hurts to install one. Unlike engine oil, there's no minimum required operating temperature for transmission fluid - the cooler the better. And the cooler you keep it, the longer it will last (which is particularly important with so many modern cars that either use "lifetime" fluids or have very long recommended change intervals.)

I'm not towing a trailer and never will. But I really think the cooler the better.

Yes, cooler tranny temps are always best.....,not so for engine oil. That's why I asked for a clarification.

Most tranny fluids are still within spec's up to 300F.
