R50/53 That purple stuff...
That purple stuff...
So.
I'm wandering around the local AutoZone today, and asked the manager about Royal Purple oil, of which I've heard so much. He told me he thought the line was going to be dropped, so the price was lowered to $5.99 a quart. It's normally around $7.29 a quart, like Mobil 1 5w-30 EP. I nabbed a case, and may go back for more. It seems like a good deal, if it's as good as I hear.
I heard one story that it is so lubricious, it feels like it adds horsepower. Sounds like a load of crappola to me, but I've heard a lot of positive comments on it.
Is anyone else using this stuff? What are your impressions?
Thanks,
Hegira

I'm convinced it's great stuff, I put it in my '03 MC and it "feels" like is has more power. Could be my imagination though....but I do think it's VERY good oil.
Put what I had left in my chipper-shedder and it doesn't seem to bog down as often
I'd get it, and let me know if you can feel a difference just from the oil change......or if you think you do.
I paid $6.99/qt for mine at O'Reilly's a few months ago.

My $.02 goes as follows on RP: It's not worth the extra whatever over Mobil1. The only reason you see a dyno shootout using RP is because they are a magazine (Primedia to be specific) sponsor. You could do the same test using RP and Mobil 1 and I'd be willing to bet that barring any other changes, you'd see the same power numbers. About the only advantage IMO is that RP carries an additive pack usually only found in diesel oil.
Rumour is that the scientist that developed Mobil syntnetic later on developed RP. With improvements. But $7+ dollars a quart? I think regular oil changes with Mobil or Castrol syn oils with be just as effective at a lower cost. A dyno would have to show some really significant improvements to make it worthwhile, otherwise what's the point? IMO

I called my AutoZone and they knew nothing of Royal Purple being on sale or them not having it anymore.
For me it's easily worth the price, since I don't put many miles on my 03 MC and change oil myself once a year.
$40/yr. for oil that I believe actually does add a bit of power is a bargin to me.

Royal Purple is all we use here in the shop. I use 5w-30 in everything we own, but i use the 5w-30 XRP in the MINI since i track it so much. it's twice as much as the normal 5w-30 but is made for extreme conditions and boosted motors. but Mobil 1 is also a fine oil, we just feel that RP is better. the car just starts better, runs better, and the over all feel is better.

not that i know, but it could be. ... the RP the you can get at any parts store will be just fine in the car and it is a good price. but i have been playing around with some of there other oils. the 5w-30 XPR used to be called racing 21. XRP is $12.99 a Qt.

Maybe Autozone is dropping it but I highly doubt it's going away entirely. This stuff is widely used in industry for compressors, pumps, and a variety of rotating equipment. It's got a strong and demanding customer base in the chemical industry.
So.

Its made here near Houston. My dad runs the stuff in my moms 03 Mustang GT with a wix filter. They just passed 275,000 on the odo ( my mom travels for work.... ALOT) they did a tear down at ford and told them that the engine looked damn near new. No build-up on the valves, there was still cross- hatch marks in the cylinder walls ( sleeves nowadays but still impressive) I am so impressed I am running it in Mojo, and my butt dyno says it works, plus I've seen a pickup of 1-2 mpg.
I used it in my lst car and now my MINI.
My last car: 2002 Camaro Z28, LS1, 6-speed.
Put RP in engine, tranny, and rear diff. Ran excellent and could definately notice a difference in the butt dyno.
I currently run the RP in Blu-Bal for oil. But will be switching out the tranny fluid to RP soon.

when you have a car that normally uses standard oil, then switching to a synthetic you will then notice a difference in performance.
I had a 2001 Ford Taurus using standard oil, switched to Royal Purple and on average gained 2 miles per gallon increase in milage.
