Who does everyone have as a provider? I need to switch ASAP because I am getting hosed by my insurance company. I am on my dad's policy and he just informed me that my insurance is $1500 every 6 months. I have been in like one fender bender ever and have never gotten a ticket in my life.

HELP!

I've got Farmer's and they have been good to me for years ..... and for a number of years, they were one of the few to cover classic Mini's without question too ...
... it also depends on the agent you find - ask around before you hand over the cash ...

I've been with Allstate since 1990. I've lived in three different states since then and all of the Allstate people I've dealt with are pretty cool. They give multiple car discounts, disounts if you have homeowners or renters insurance thu them. No major problems other than one time they didn't update my address in ALL of their databases so my bills were sent to the old address for a while.

I am 25 in South Carolina with Nationwide. Mine runs 725 every 6 months for my 97 GMC Jimmy 4WD for full coverage and my girlfriends insurance will run about the same every 6 months for the Cooper S. My driving record is the reasoning behind my blistering policy. Having a Bright Red Mustang Cobra with 450 horsepower for 3 years killed my insurance since I thought I had something to prove at the time.

Cabbage

PS Shop around at progressive.com, etc because they will give you quotes from 3 competitors and all that jazz, then you'll see if you are really in line. It also depends on your deductibles, glass, theft and the like.

Wow Lauren, that is insane! That's a rate for someone five years younger, male, and wanted in several states. "Hosed" is putting it mildly!

I use Amica, and have a great rate with them ($900/year in Boston). In Connecticut I used Progressive, and always had great rates even when I was saddled with a few BS moving violation tickets.

OK...I'm on with my dad and he says right now that it's $944 every 6 months...which is still high, but at least it's not $1500. I am looking online at all the sites you guys mentioned to see if I can get anything lower.... He is on the phone with the insurance company too and he said that there was some kind of memo that it was going to go up $500. I am so confused....

I think we can all agree that insurance companies that get greedy time to time... sounds like it's happened a few times with you not really being too aware of the increase. I'm sure you'll get sorted out quickly. Get your best quote, then put your existing company on the spot, and see if they'll match it.

Good way to do business anywhere really!

My 2002 S runs $600 per year, about the same as my 2003 F150 pickup. But I'm twice your age and a lucky driver in North Carolina. Try State Farm. I've had them in two states and they are always good.

what state are you located in? each insurance company usually files their rates with the insurance dept in each of the states that they do business in. their rates will differ from state to state. so, from one state to the next they may or may not be as competitive as other insurance companies doing business in that same state. so, it might be better to ask people in your state what insurance carrier they suggest. also, I'd suggest making use of the web and getting quotes at these websites;

http://www.insweb.com
http://www.insure.com

Also, you can try each companies respective websites for online quotes. Companies like

http://www.geico.com
http://www.progressive.com
http://www.i21.com
http://www.wawanesa.com

these companies generally sell direct to consumers inferring that they'll have cheaper rates. but, this is not always the case. also, even if you get a quote from them from one source (i.e., on the phone, through another website, etc.) you might get a different quote from them using another source. the reason being that they'll sometimes use slightly different rates depending on the marketing program that your quotation source is using. so basically, just keep looking. hopefully you'll find something that will fit your situation better. good luck!

If you are under 30 and have ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING on your record, State Farm and Allstate will give you HORRIBLE rates. And I've never gotten a Geico quote that was under twice the normal amount when shopping for insurance over the years.

Well get this....my dad and I are haggling on the phone for my insurance rates. We got it down to $730.50/6 months. I'm still trying to figure out where the $500 increase came in....but I can definitely work with this....they knocked like $200 off the other quote I got.

Have you tried Mercury? They have pretty decent rates and good coverage. With my MC, I'm paying close to $1400 a year.

LMini ... I put this on the "I'm angry now" thread .. but just to make sure you get it...

We're locateed in PA, so I'd expect similar rates for us...

I'm married 35, Wife is 22 ... we just got a married discount on our insurance, which brings the Mini S down to about $500/year. Before the discount it was $600/year.

We have no tickets ... no accidents ... reasonable limits (50/100k, plus a $500 deductable). We get our insurance through Unitrin Direct ... purchased online.

Prior to Unitrin we used CNA (as I had for like 10 years without ever having a claim). I added my fiancee and her Turbo Beetle and the policy increased something ridiculous, like over $1200 more... when I switched to Unitrin it dropped something like $1000... we were paying slightly more for the Beetle than we are for the Mini S....

So keep shopping it!

I'll keep shopping around, but I seem to have gotten it down to at least a REASONABLE amount. Part of me wonders whether or not my dad was just losing his mind when he was talking about the $500 increase, but increase or no, I still got it dropped $200 from the amount I was quoted online. So I'm happy.

Yeah, you got it down, but you're still paying almost 3 times what we are in a similar age bracket and similar area to my wife/I ... that just doesn't seem right.

Lmini-

Glad to hear you got a good rate  Just to give you an idea, I checked around
(getting ready for an MCS). For a 2003 MCS with DSC, living in Bloomfield Hills, MI
25 years old (last week  it ran (Thru MIC General) $2,180 per year.
Thru Geico, $2,360
Thru Allstate, $2,290

Currently running $3,880/yr for a 2001 Olds Intrigue and 2002 Vette (no tickets or claims, both cars garaged). So I'm exicted about the drop

you should consider yourself lucky.. my dad is on the insurance of my car, he is about 56 with a completely clean record... and we're paying about $950 every 6 months.... it is cheaper than my altima was though.

i just did a quote for myself for progressive.. 4,354 every 6 months.. thats complete bull. when i was looking to get a used 3 series coupe i got quoted 7 grand every 6 months.. the nerve!

I sometimes gripe about PA ... about half the roads are in truly horrible shape and we have this communist state-run liquor store system (you can't even buy beer anywhere but a distributor or a bar, it's truly ridiculous and insulting)... however if there is one thing I can't complain about it is the insurance rates...

I can truly not believe the amounts some people are paying for insurance. I think we are paying a little bit over $1000 PER YEAR for comprehensive coverage of BOTH my Jeep and my wife's Mini!

I could not IMAGINE paying the 2-4 times that much that many of you are quoting...

It would be like having a whole separate car payment just to pay the insurance.... yikes

We have been with Allstate for about 10 years with no tickets or claims. The following are premiums for our three cars for six months, full coverage, $500 deductible including uninsured motorist.

’01 BMW X5 $490.35
’02 Chevy 2500HD truck $335.04
’03 MCS $273.98

As you can see, the MCS is less than $550 per year. I am happy with Allstate, but I have never had a claim so I have no idea how they are when you need them.

I've been with State Farm for more than 20 years, in five different states. I'm in Washington state now. The MINI runs me $425/6 months. Our other car, a '99 Volvo wagon/tank, runs me $390/6 months. In Washington, where we suck up costs from uninsured motorists running amok, this is apparently considered a great deal.
