My '04 MC, 57,000 mi, here in snowy salty massachusetts has some rust along the weld of the muffler around near where the tail pipe is, but also there is an area away from a weld where there is rust to the point where I can poke my finger a little bit through the rust (but did not want to try to poke my finger all the way through the muffler...I do not know if in that area the muffler is just one layer thick )...any thoughts as to: safety, warranty, urgency to fix/replace? I will be bringing the car in to the dealer in a couple weeks for an oil change.

 

i doubt you'll see any warranty $$ for something like that. i wouldn't be too worried about it until it actually starts to leak, at which point you'll be able to hear it.

when the time comes, i have a stock 04 cat-back exhaust if you want, i'll give you a good deal on it. i took it off my car with less than 5000 miles on it.

if you come to me (north jersey) i'll even install it for you.

 

My 02 Cooper had rust like yours last year and quite a bit more now. Still waiting for it to rot all the way through and I will probably go with an aftermarket exhaust at that time.

I had thought that MINIs came with stainless steel exhaust/mufflers.....does.anyone know if this is true? if so, is it very unusual for a stainless steel muffler to rust through in only 4 years?

 

My 02 Mini muffler is rusting out. Do you still have the cat-back exhaust system, would you be willing to ship and how much do you want?
(I really don't want to replace it with some Track-Auto junk....)
