R50/53 Angeles Crest "Highway" Whoooo!
First let me appologize to all the respectable Mini drivers. That being said I (so I think) was hell on this road. AC HWY is in my back yard and today was the first time I've ever been on it. (not a native Californian) Oh my god was it fun. I started out cruising at 50per an was ok with that until some sixties looking vintage car started a challenge. From that point "I got my curve on." we were flying. mind you I still have the stock suspension on my "S" but she handled so well, and as you know with FWD you keep the gas on and she'll pull you thru. I think everyone with an "S" that has performance tires is familiar with the noise these stock tires make, but rest assured they hold very well. This guy must have been up there quite a few times because his line was good, but he couldn't get away from the "S." I love curves and the Mini was perfect. I can't wait to get the rest of my goodies from Randy. I know this is no big deal to alot of you, but I had to share my joy. For those of you Cali-folk who've never driven Angeles Crest, My god what are you waiting for. It has made my day!

When do you normaly go? I usually drive thereon the weekdays when not many cars are around. I've also seen a silk green cooper make the run once. we should make it a regular thing. (horseshoe is a blast isn't it) it becomes even better when you master all the little nuances of the course, where the off camber turns/ kinks are, where the rough spots are. if you decide to make the run up to wilson, let me know. the blind turns there will be fun to take but you'll need a spotter for the blind spots. I live a short distance from there. (Glendale/Eagle rock)
Pick up my new S in Concord next Saturday morn. Will return to Monrovia, pick up my wife, and head for ACH. I will still be breaking in, so it will just be a tour. Still, can't stay away. Why am I picking up the S at a dealer in Concord with a dealer less than 2 miles away? See my post on dealers.
Back to business--after I am run in-- love to follow you two up there and get used to curving a FWD. Not been there before.

>>but they tend not to stop cars, they're looking for bikes.
Very true, they like to target bikes for speeding and passing slower traffic on double yellow lines but the CHP loves to write cars tickets for crossing the double yellow on twisty mountain roads. Not so much illegal passing, but just crossing the double yellow in the turns. In my neck of the woods in the mountains of San Diego County, there is zero tolerance by the CHP for even touching the double yellow in a turn. I am speaking from experience.

That is one of the all-time best roads. I used to ride up there twice a week during my college years. I think I still remember most of the curves by memory. In a car is just not the same although it is fun. I've done plenty of stupid things up there both on bike & car. But please be careful, I've seen someone pay the ultimate price for their passion for speed.
And if the Sheriff's Dept, Rangers (yes, they can give you a ticket) or CHP see you motoring a little too quickly, they won't care you aren't a bike. But the speed traps are usually for bikes.
Without preaching, a method to improve your driving overall and chosing proper lines is try drive up there without using your brakes (within reason). You'll be surprised how much you learn about proper gear selection, entry speed and angle when you can't brake beforehand or mid-corner. Its especially useful on a bike but you learn quite a bit in a car too.
Keep the rubber side down and stay on the right of the double yellow.

Mini St Racer; It was my 1st time up there it wasn't a normality. I was there Sunday afternoon, not much traffic at all. Where is Wilson? Oh! I like your tag frame.
